Hooks...what exactly are they and do I have any?

Ok, so I've been reading alot about hooks on here and I just wanted to get further explanation on what they are. I also wanted to see if I have any and how much help they will be when applying.

So...
Im from an underrepresented country in Africa (Nigeria) and I live in an underrepresented state (SC)
I've moved alot because...
My parents are missionaries. They were missionary doctors in Africa but now they were in the International office (dad: deputy director, mom: assistant archivist)
umm...
I skipped a grade so i'm a year younger than everybody in my grade
annnndddd..... I think thats it
Oh! i read somewhere that being national or state athlete can be a hook and i was wondering if being a state qualifier alternate counts ( I know its a stretch but i thought id just put it out there :/ )

If you are young and applying for 11th,I would repeat if I was you just because statistaclly youd be more likely to get in. I think being a URM is a hook. I’ve moved a lot also so I’m hoping that’s a hook but I don’t think it is.

URM? whats that?

Under Represented Minority.

ohhh…thanks

what about being a missionary kid?

43…
36…
29…
22…
15…
counting down is pretty fun

Should help, means you’ve been raised with ‘the righ values’ I guess. Give back to the community and all? I hate giving advice because I feel hardly qualified.

i realy have no idea what they are :/

i’m also an MK too
and when i apply to colleges i’m definitely going to
talk about how my life is different from many other peoples’
who stay in one place for most of their lives.
Also, i plan to talk about my father’s ministries in my perspective
and we live in china so i can talk about how that affects my life too.
I think what we have in common is being a TCK and going to
a less developed country and sacrificing what we had before.
hope i helped:D

thanks! thats so cool that we’re both TCKs!!! im going to be talking about it to :D

btw thanks for resurecting my thread from the depths of what ever non-first page it was on :D

im confused. lullabyducky- that’s a creative username  I applaud this

To answer the first question, about what is a hook? A hook is something you have that the school needs or wants. It’s what gets people in. They are terribly important because many qualified people apply to these schools, but who will get in? So you being from Nigeria could be a hook. But generally, they are athletics (and no, this does not count as playing soccer for a year then quitting. This is having the support of the coach - rare for BS), stellar teacher letters, legacy, leadership roles, etc. Hooks are more important for college than for boarding school - so you don’t really have to worry now!

I’m a TCK too :D

What is a TCK?

If someone needs to know what a hook is please do a search. There are tons of threads on this board with some fairly accurate information. Possesing great teacher recs and being VP of Student Government are not hooks. They may be admirable attributes which enhance the application but hooks are completely different.

Also, I would argue that hooks are very important in the BS application process. Please do the research so as not to fall prey to misinformation.

TCK

[Third culture kid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Third culture kid - Wikipedia)

That Wikipedia article is so perfect, you have no idea :D…
Unless of course you are a TCK, so whoever has questions about that please read the article.

Are you a TCK tristan2?

am i an URM

I’m a quad citizen-don’t ask :p
