Hooks?

Hello!

This coming fall I will be applying to colleges, more importantly I will be applying ED at NYU. I just wanted to know a few hooks that would help any college applicant through the process.

I believe my hooks are being a first generation college student, and I'm an African American female. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, those would be hooks.

Edit: Other hooks include being a recruited athlete or being a legacy.

How much of a “boost” would those give me?

They are inherent to your application however. You don’t have to do anything different in your application for them to be noted as a ‘hook’ if NYU gives those aspects special consideration.

How much of a boost depends on the school and the admissions cycle. At some schools a hook will simply get your application an extra ‘read’ before you are declined. Generally, all things being equal someone with a hook will get the spot over someone without a hook. It is not that simple as things are rarely ‘equal’. Your GPA, rank, and SAT may be identical to another applicants however the LOR’s may be excellent, ECs were unique, and essays outstanding. In this situation only the admissions representative at that school, with that pool of applicants can say who would get the spot.

Being first generation is a tip that’s moderate at best, and generally only at schools with comprehensive financial aid programs.

Being black, or any URM (under-represented minorities, which also include Hispanics and Native Americas), is a fairly significant boost. This is not to say that under-qualified URMs get in, but that statistically qualified URMs–perhaps without the truly remarkable ECs of many HYPSM admits–stand a very good chance of being accepted.

Quick question: Being a first generation college student, how much finaid do you need? While most ED agreements will allow a student to withdraw if the aid package isn’t substantial enough, it prevents you from comparing aid packages from multiple colleges.

I appreciate such insightful and thorough answers, I really hope applying ED, my hooks, and my stats help me get accepted into my dream school.

Applying ED to NYU necessitates that you do not need financial aid. Hopefully that is the case here. Please don’t even consider being one of the NYU accepted candidates here on CC deserately looking for loans and determined to go to their dream school despite the absurd debt. Ufortunately, NYU becomes the nightmare school for many.
