Hope this question is not obnoxious

My family is very very lucky in that we will be able to pay for college out of pocket. Our EFC, (at least on on-line calculators) is well more than twice what even the most expensive college would cost and there are only two kids in the family. So, my question is: Is there any reason to fill out the FAFSA? Some people have told us you should fill one out no matter what. Any thoughts?

Your question is not obnoxious.

My opinion: Unless the college you are applying to states that you must file in order to be eligible for any merit awards, there is no reason to bother.

This question has come up before (rather often, actually) and opinion on CC is split, but most posters advise filling out and filing the forms no matter what.

I disagree.

I’ve never heard of filing out FASFA forms unless one needed financial aid. My family can pay out of pocket, and I never once filled out a FASFA form.

Thanks so much Midmo! Yes, we keep being told by people we know to “file no matter what” but I can’t get any answer on WHY they think this. I tried to search for a thread on this but was not able to find them. Really appreciate your reply.

If you want to take out the federal loans, then you would need to fill out the FAFSA.

Also, some schools require a FAFSA to be filled out to receive merit awards. So you might have to should you be awarded a merit scholarship.

But if neither of the above applies to you, there is no reason to file it.

I guess the only other reason beyond desired eligibility for merit awards is if your family can envision any circumstance where income and assets would disappear. Only thing I can think of is if 100% of assets were invested with Bernie Madoff, both parents lose jobs or die, and for some reason there is no insurance. I would imagine if your EFC is so high then there is substantial insurance and assets if income goes south and that filling out the FAFSA is more hassle than it is worth. Be very, very thankful that you are in a family with such a depth of resources.

CC. Thank you. We are very aware that we are fortunate. We do give to charities who help others who are less fortunate attend school.
