Applying:

UVM
Rutgers New Brunswick
Virginia Tech
PennState- University Park
SUNY Plattsburgh?
Oberlin
Duke???...
Middlebury???
Connecticut College

Middlebury has a strong ES program but will be a long reach for you. Colorado College is another small college with good ES (supported by a new LEED-certified science center), a gorgeous setting, and excellent outdoor programs. It is very selective but less so than Middlebury. Raise your SATs, keep your grades up, and you’d probably have a decent shot there. They offer Early Action with notification by late December - mid-January, which is very nice for the impatient or anxiety-prone.

You have an odd mix of small LACs and big public universities. Can’t decide which you prefer?

as you are checking out SUNY Plattsburg, also look into SUNY -
[SUNY-ESF: SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry](http://www.esf.edu)

it’s a SUNY program (with OOS SUNY tuition which is still very reasonable) and it is housed on syracuse U campus. It seems like an interesting program and may meet your needs. It may be a “hybrid” environment as ESF is fairly small but you are apart of the Syracuse U college environment too.

SUNY Stony Brook- Southhampton campus also has environmental studies program.

Duke’s Nicholas School seems to be a good fit.

"The Nicholas School of the Environment cooperates with Trinity College to offer exciting educational opportunities to Duke undergraduates interested in the environment (from both a science and policy perspective), in earth sciences, ocean sciences, and natural history. "

[Nicholas School Undergraduate Programs](Undergraduate Programs | Nicholas School of the Environment)

Here is a thread on it in the Duke forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/duke-university/740696-nicholas-school-environment-earth-sciences.html

You will need to bring up your scores/GPA (GPA more so…) for Duke and Middlebury though… both are reaches.

thanks guys, yeah i know middlebury is a huuugee reach for me. haha

what about the other schools i put such as Rutgers or Oberlin? Do you know what kind of students they look for? Any advice/constructive criticism would be great.

rutgers school of environmental and biological studies (i thiiink is the name) offers an environmental studies program. apparently, this academic department in its entirety was devised at rutgers: [Rutgers | Rutgers Admissions](File Not Found | University Undergraduate Admissions)

and can you elaborate on your question, ‘what kind of students do they look for?’ i’d love to help, but am not too sure of what you’re asking.

As in, do they look for strong grades, strong extracurriculars, etc? I have pretty strong grades, but because I do crew and marching band I don’t have time for many extracurriculars or volunteering outside of school. I’m afraid this will hurt my chances of getting into these schools. Do you think they will understand that I’m taking the most rigorous courses offered at my school, and also participating in marching band and crew, and this is why I don’t have time for any other activities? I just don’t want them to dismiss my application once they see I have little to no extracurriculars.
