Hopeful Ivy Leaguer

Future Ivy Leaguer Hopeful

Hey guys, I know that it's late, but I cannot wait. I am "dying" to get into an Ivy League college, specifically Brown, Harvard, UPenn, or Yale. My mom went to Brown, which can help. I have been to two summer camps at Brown (awesome experience), and I fell in love with the place. I want to even play basketball to increase admission chances. I am only a sophomore and have not taken the SAT yet (will take in fall), so don't chew me out on it!Also, I have about 20 inventions that I will "sell" this summer/ work with company in nearby city.

Okay…you posted this on seven other forums. That says something about you.
I have this feeling that this is some kind of closet ■■■■■, but oh well.

Your stats are good, and you seem well-rounded.
But there is this sinking feeling that you may get rejected at like all Ivies except like two.
I do not know why. I have this feeling that you don’t seem like the type who can stick to one thing and see it through, or you do too much for your own good.

There is just something wrong with this picture.

And yes, I noticed that he posted this everywhere.
And dude, get a grip, IVY status is not everything. There are a boat load of colleges like MIT and CALTECH that isn’t IVY but up there.

There’s something not normal about you.
AND WHY AREN’T YOU POSTING THIS IN JUST ONE THREAD, like the CHANCES THREAD, instead of spamming all the IVY pages with the same thing?

and here’s where it all falls apart (although using quotation marks as emphasis didn’t help either) - you don’t do activities to try to get you into college, you do activities that you like and then college admission follows. oh boy. good luck.

Hey
I’m also obsessed with the ivies, but you should calm down. Doing basketball for the sake of getting into Harvard is not going to help you. The time you spend in basketball will be better spent if you developed a certain talent or passion. I love to talk in front of people, volunteer, and write. That’s what I do in my time. What do you like to do? Spend time with it and take your interest to a higher level. This stands out and gets you into any ivy.

Are you on the varsity basketball team? If so, how are you only 5-11 but still get 13 rebounds per game unless you play in some crap conference. And how do you dunk when you are 5-7? There’s only a few people who can do that. Are you black? Because I’ve never heard of a 5-7 white guy being able to dunk. And, if you are black, you will probably get in a lot of places with your grades.

And how do you make 20 inventions? Are they just ideas or have you developed prototypes for all of them? Because inventing 20 things is difficult. Have you even checked patent websites to make sure those things aren’t already invented?

As others stated, something does not add up here.

just do something you’re passionate about and stick to it. Even with that and good grades, at best your chances are down to the luck of the draw. that’s the reality of ivy admissions these days.

You seem well-rounded and you’ve got great stats so far. Maybe you’ll get into an Ivy, maybe you won’t (though, if you keep on the same path, you probably will). But “dying” to get into an Ivy? As others said, it’s a crapshoot. Harvard’s acceptance is 7% this year (I got waitlisted, so I know how it feels). You can do the best you can, but chance will always play some role.

Besides that, Ivy’s not everything…it’s just an old athletic conference of 8 Northeast schools that have been around for centurie, so they could pile up reputation and money. They deserve their reputation, but look at Stanford, Duke, MIT, Caltech–none of these is an Ivy, yet they’re all in the same caliber.

Also, what do you actually want to DO in life? Prestige is good and all, but any college will find a person with true passions (not just chasing honor) more appealing.

Thanks for your input everyone. I have heard that trying to get recruite helps you out, that’s all I was after. Also, I am not black (I’m greek-we have hops). I get 13rpg because I have a “killer instinct” where I go to a whole other level of competiveness. I am not solely looking at ivies (Duke, Caltech, and MIT are on my list, too); I just know that it’s next to impossible to predict what will happen. If some of you could share my stories on getting into an ivy or the other schools i mentioned, pleae tell me. I am not after prestige, I just want a top-notch education. My passions are: playing basketball and clarinet, debating (in tournaments), inventing new products, and making small, underpriveleged kids smile. I know that this sounds fake or too good to be true, but believe me when I tell you this. I do not plan on getting into every school, and having everybody eat out of the palm of my hand. Back to basketball- I impresses one of brown’s basketball scouts last summer during a cam and he was actually stunned. He tried to play as much as he could with me after that day. My coach says that i can make all-state, so I know that I am good. I have drawen up prototypes because I do not have access to the funding/research centers to carry out my plans. I have been blessed to just think of random things that actually work (although some people have beaten me to market on a few products). Happy Easter!!!

Hey, sorry I misspelled a bunch in my last post. I guess I should have slept more last night…or proofread more closely. Anyway, I just want a good education and you’ll be hardpressed to find anyone that says the ivies are trash schools. Sure, I am high, but I sometimes like added pressure to succeed. I know by taking this path, I am in for a world of unrestricted hurt! Anyway, enjoy the rest of your weekend!!!

Bump…Can somebody give me some tips here? Just to let you know, I’m not desperate, just curious on how to best present myself and my passions.

You’re a sophomore. You won’t be presenting anyone with your “passions” for more then a year. There aren’t any tips people can give you besides chill out and don’t get caught up in Ivy prestige. And I say that as someone who goes to Harvard. Also, you say all you’re looking for is a “top notch education.” If so, look outside the confines of the Ivies and other Caltech/MIT. Schools like Reed and UChicago have arguable “better” undergraduate educations. This term one of my Professors went to Pomona and another went to Reed. So don’t confine yourself.

Thanks White_Rabbit. The only reason that I don’t want to go to UChicago is I sheerly don’t want to be in Chicago. It’s a great city, but I want to stay on the east coast. I do not know too much about Reed; I think that you did not see that I am considering Wake, Duke, Hopkins, and possibly Vanderbilt as well. Thanks for your input!

bump…bump…bump

Have you heard of “the professa”? he’s 5’6", white, and he can dunk. he was on And1 street ball

Yeah, I think I have heard of “the professa”…And1, that’s some entertaining stuff to watch! Thanks!

bump…bump

bump…some assistance, please?
