NYU
UC-Berk.
UCLA
UMaryland
USC
UVA
Columbia

Thanks!

your gpa is a little low, but if you have been showing steady improvement, who knows? especially if you're going to be a journalism major, so they won't care too much about math and science (at least this is the hope that I'm clingling to becasue I want to major in journalism also). you have kick ass ec's and loads of aps, so that area will give you a sure boost. you have way more aps than i do, and i want to apply to northwestern too. But hey, what aspiring journalist doesn't?
i'd say Barnard is a sure thing.
Northwestern-- worth a try, go for it
NYU--also worth a try, easier than northwestern
UC Berk.-- good chance, but not for sure
UCLA-- same
USC-- you're in
Columbia- - not so sure

The rest I'm not too fimiliar with. Good Luck! oh and hey, are you doing early application for any of these schools?

Definitely apply to Elon, and then apply to the Journalism and Communications Fellows program. Trust me!

A few questions: is that your weighted or unweighted GPA? What is your UC GPA (if you don't know what I am talking about, see <a href="http://www.ucop.edu/pathways)?%5B/url%5D">www.ucop.edu/pathways)?</a> Where do you live or will you be applying to all of these schools out of state? Do you need significant financial aid or can you afford to pay full price?

I hope you will take this in the spirit in which it is intended, but I hope you have some match and safety schools that you haven't listed. The public schools you have chosen are some of the most difficult schools in the country to get in as a non-resident, and several are extremely difficult to get into even for residents with terrific grades and test scores. Even if you can increase your SAT I score by 300 points, your GPA is going to be a real weakness. Although I would need more information, I would predict that many of these schools are unrealistic reaches where your chances are very slim. Doesn't mean you should not give several of these schools a shot (and hopefully prove me wrong!), but do have a realistic back up plan of solid safeties and match schools.

I agree with Carolyn. Some potential match/safety schools might be American U, San Jose State (nice journalism program!) and University of Minnesota. With your interests in government and journalism, you might want to check out colleges that are in or near state capitals or in D.C.

pointandshoot: thanks for your comments- and i'm glad to see that you want to go into journalism as well :) what medium? (tv/print/radio, etc.) I am only applying RD. :) thank you!

marebare5: I don't know much about Elon and their fellowship. Do you attend Elon?

at the very least, maryland = you're set

carolyn-
that is my unweighted gpa. my UC gpa is (if I did it correctly) a 3.6 - (btw thank you for sharing that site, I did not realize there was a calculator for the UC eligibility!) I live in Maryland, and I am not relying upon financial aid but on loans and private scholarships that are application-based.

I appreciate your concern!- this is not my final list of applying to schools. there are safeties that I am applying to that I did not include on my list because I am about 95% sure that I will (hopefully) get into those schools as well. Are there any matchs or safeties that you can suggest that I should apply to? My GPA is absolutely my weakest point- my SAT scores and SAT IIs can and WILL increase, but my gpa is pretty much going to state about the same. Most of my safeties are in Maryland... although I would like to go out of state.

I appreciate your time- please let me know if you have any other questions! I am open to any and all suggestions of schools.

northstarmom: thanks for your suggestions! i will certainly look into those schools as well. as i live in maryland, i would like to venture out for college- but you are right, D.C. is the best place if you are interested in government/politics!

greenmoon33: hopefully! i know maryland is becoming harder and harder to get into- they are trying to have the same standards as UCLA. They have a great J-program as well, so hopefully that'll work out. thanks!

Ohio University - Scripps School of Journalism is excellent and would be a match for you.

CareBear98: I want to go into print journalism....magazine I think. I was thinking about politics for a while also, but now I'm not so sure.

I've never heard anything about UMaryland....good journalism program?

Oh, and also, I've been looking at Syracuse University and people have been telling me it is known for journalism .... so you might want to check it out, it looks like a good match for you.

U Maryland does have a good journalism program that includes a faculty with profs who either are or had been well respected professional journalists. Great internship possibilities, too, in the D.C. area and in Baltimore. Great chances, too, to cover good stories in DC, Annapolis and Baltimore.

You should definitely check out ohio univ. they will give you decent scholarships with your stats and it is a very good school (I plan on going there so im kinda biased)

Maryland has an excellent program. Syracuse also has an excellent program, so if the university is a match, the journalism school is a reach.

Other match/safeties: Kansas, Missouri, Arizona, Kentucky, Georgia (could be a reach? not sure about their selectivity, but it's tougher than you'd think), Florida, Texas (reach for anyone from out of state)

I'm sorry but a 3.4 and a 1900 are far from 'in' at Barnard. Plus Barnard doesn't even have a journalism major.
