i am currently a rising junior in high school and Rice has been my first choice of college for over a year. I like that i will stay in Texas and the residential college system. What are the main things that rice admissions are looking for. GPA? SAT? Recommendations? Interview? Job/ CS?

HELP!

the obvious ones are your SAT, SAT II , GPA, class rank, recommendations and essays

remember, Rice is a top school, so they look at everything. there are many qualified applicants with 3.9 GPA’s and 2250+ SAT’s so those are almost necessary to be in contention.

You also need something unique, special Extra curricular involvement or something to distinguish yourself from the pack of people who look good on paper

Rice uses an holistic approach to admissions. Just scores won’t do it. You should review the admission web site. Rice looks at what is special about each applicant and what they can add to Rice while they are there.

“We seek students, both undergraduate and graduate students, of keen intellect and diverse backgrounds who not only show potential for success at Rice, but who will contribute to the educational environment of those around them.”

“An applicant’s entire file is considered and each applicant is considered in competition with all other applicants. In making a decision to admit or award financial aid, we are careful not to ascribe too much value to any single metric, such as rank in class, grade-point average, the SAT/ACT or Graduate Record Exam.”

that being said, you still need to be in a good score ballpark. They use a “holistic” approach meaning that a guy with good recos and EC’s and a 2200 SAT will probably be preferred over a guy with a 2400 and not such good EC’s etc.

You still need good scores to really be in contention, barring something speical that you explain to them.

having a 1800 SAT, unless you are a olympic pole vaulter or something, rarely will make the cut

Granted all the numbers are important. By far the most accepted are in the top 5% of their class. You have the best percentage odds if you score in the top range of Reading and or Math SATs or above 34 ACT. However, if you look at what Rice publishes about the class, they are very interested in what else you have done. The 75th percentile for SATs in the 2011 class is 2260. That means a lot of people were below that. They are proud of what else the class did:[Rice University | Prospective Students](http://www.futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Class_of_2011.asp?SnID=2123468982)

Consider taking the ACT. Remember that Rice will take it in place of the SAT+Subject Tests.

singersmom - yeah, definitely. I guess I was just saying that EC’s and participation were very important, yet they rarely make up for poor grades or bad performance

I guess, Rice needs good or pretty good grades but they need a lot of other things because many people who apply have the grades and scores
