Hopeful sociology grad student

Hello!

I am currently attending a well known school in Ohio and am hoping to go to graduate school in the Fall. I do not have the best GPA and have yet to take the GRE but I am double majoring in Sociology and Criminal Justice and playing a varsity sport at my university with other various community service activities.

I will have completed a year and a half long research project required by my current university where I have sent out surveys and conducted interviews where I have personally coded the results. With my GPA only being a 3.02 I feel it is unlikely for me to get in anywhere and my time is running out! The schools that I want to go to have deadlines in Jan and Feb.

How much of a chance do I have to get into a good Graduate program in Sociology when my grades where they're at?

Please help!

If you haven’t even taken the GRE, why are you rushing to apply this year? You should wait at least until next fall to apply. Have you drafted any personal statements? Have you talked to any professors about applying to grad school?

We can’t really talk about your chances; grad admissions are holistic. You have a 3.02, but your sociology major GPA may be much higher; the quality of your research experience may be outstanding and you may have excellent letters from your recommenders and an exceptional fit with the programs to which you apply. If the rest of your package is just average, then you’re not a very competitive applicant; but if you’re otherwise outstanding you could be. It just depends.

But you don’t sound very prepared to apply to PhD programs, so I would advocate waiting at least until next fall to apply.
