Hopeful Swatty

So I am the first one in my family to go through the college admissions process. I come from a south-eastern high school where most kids who are successful go to our state schools. I really want to go to Swarthmore because I think I would love learning engineering in a liberal arts environment. I’d also have the opportunity to have an unrelated double major or minor. Basically explore my passions while still prepping for the real world. Anyway here goes nothing.

Essays:
Main Essay was on my adjustment to moving constantly during my childhood and then moving from the west coast to the east coast right before high school. Talked about adjusting to constant change and finding confidence in who I am as a person. Mentioned David Foster Wallace’s Kenyon grad speech and my Rheumatoid Arthritis as two main influential events

I want to major in Bio-Medical Engineering/Physics with a minor in cultural studies or a language.

and I’m a first generation white dude. I know that can affect admissions decisions sometimes.

Thanks for any help that you might be able to give!

If any other information is needed, just ask in the comments. I’ll respond as promptly as possible.

Looks good. Four years of varsity baseball? Are you a key player? Did you contact Swarthmore coach?

Yeah but I’m not sure I want to play baseball at Swarthmore. Because Swarthmore is D3, the coach probably couldn’t do much for me in terms of admission, right?

Do you think I have a good chance without getting recruited?

At some LACs 30% of the students are recruited athletes. I am guessing Swat is 15%.

Your versatility is a plus for an engineer! Good luck.

@Youthofthenation … You should absolutely contact the coach. Ask a question about time commitment if you were to play or something along those lines. There are physical education requirements I believe, so playing a sport gets you out of them. Not wanting to play baseball at Swarthmore isn’t an option if you don’t get in.

The athletic teams provide a strong social network in a small school. You might want to reconsider your assumptions if Are accepted. If possible, meet with the coach/team at Ride the Tide (accepted student progam). Good luck!

A baseball player at my school is recruited by Swarthmore, so definitely try
