Hopeful Transfer for Fall 08

Hey. I am currently a first year at a four year institution and I'm really interested in transferring to Tufts. Does anybody who attends Tufts or not, have any helpful advice for me regarding a possible transfer to Tufts? Thanks.

Your question is very vague. Tell us a little about yourself—where do you go to school now; what do you want to study; what was your high school record like; did you apply to Tufts as a freshman and were you rejected/deferred?

Here are my stats:

Hs gpa: 3.05 UW (had APS, honors, college courses)
Sat 1:1980
Sat II: 2c-700 Us History-580
Ecs: Volunteered at hospital contributing approximately 600 hours
I was also part of youth leadership team at the hospital.
Wrote for school newspaper and was assistant sports editor
Peer counseling officer and member for two years
Make a Wish officer and was part of the club three years.
Did track for a while as well.
Class of 06 member for three years.
Awards: President's Volunteer Service Award: Gold Level
Some various scholarships here and there.

College Gpa First Semester: 3.79
Second Semester: I believe either 3.87 or 3.94

Ecs Currently: writing for the newspaper and volunteer at Hospital
Awards: Dean List for Fall 06

I'm currently a Political Philosophy major who is also interested in studying History. I want to pursue being a civil rights\human rights lawyer for the economically disadvantaged or being a public defender. Hence I believe Tufts is good fit due to its advocation of public service after graduation and for other reasons as well. I did not apply to Tufts as a freshman.

Your high school transcript will play a big role in your application because you will have applied with only one year of college behind you. You know, I imagine, that your high school GPA and your test scores are very, very low for Tufts. That being said, you've done well at college -- however, what kind of college are you at now?

Tufts will be a real reach -- only 10% of transfers get in. That doesn't mean you shouldn't apply!

I'm currently at Syracuse University. Well by Fall 08, I would have two years behind me. I thought that after more than a year at a school, your high school grades would have less of an effect on your overall application?

Sorry, I misread -- your high school grades will, indeed, be less important as a jr transfer than as a soph transfer. That doesn't mean they're disgregarded completely. However, keep up the good work at Syracuse and good luck! :)

I didn't even graduate in the top 30% of my high school class and I got in as a transfer student. It's not impossible. Essays play the biggest role I'd imagine, my acceptance letter even mentioned my essay so I'd say that's probably the reason I got in.

I had only been in college for one semester (applied in my second semester) when I applied to Tufts so all they had to base their decision on was one semester of college, a very mediocre high school GPA and the essays. Maybe there was a very pathetic group of applicants when I applied, maybe they sent out an acceptance letter by mistake, who knows really.

You gotta have a niche though. You got to have some reason why Tufts can offer you something no other school can. This whole human rights things might be the ticket! But then again Tufts' student body is only slightly to the right of Lenin on the political spectrum so I'd imagine that the admissions committe probably sees alot of letters about economic inequality. Try writing something about wanting to see the Red Army in Davis Square. That might catch their eye.
