Hopefully Helpful Admission Information Regarding "Top 10%"

I took my d on 3/28 for an official campus visit. (She’s in-state, top 15%.)

The Admission Counselor explained that for the new incoming Freshman Class:

13,000 were “accepted.” (80% of this number was in-state top 10 %.)

So even if you had perfect SATs or ACTs, the fact that you’re not Top 10% or live in a different, you’re fighting for those remaining, precious spots.

Then, UT anticipates that after all is said and done, just 6500 students will actually ATTEND (they “accept” too many knowing that a lot of students use UT as their fallback/safety school and eventually attend elsewhere.)

Plus, out of the 6500 total expected, 1300 will actually start early thru the “summer program.” (So the “REAL” number of "admitted&attending" incoming freshman for Fall ’08 is 5200 round numbers - wow.)

So after the information session, I personally asked the Admission’s Counselor that if this Top 10% trend continues, the incoming freshmen classes could easily become 100% in-state, Top 10%. (Her answer, "We don’t like to think about it, but it is an eventuality.")

And until legislation is changed, this “Top 10% Rule” will likely affect the incoming students for the next several years.

Please don’t kill the messenger. Just our experience.
Everyone Good Luck,
