So first of all: you are a rising junior?
Did you get a National medal in your activity? ( or was that an assumption?)

<p>Shows dedication toward Academic Decathlon. What I am worried about is whether ALOT of people do it, u know? Like FBLA, DECA, etc. How can you distinguish yourself?</p>
<p>Sophomore, is Academic Decathlon widely popular like FBLA and a lot of categories to compete in? ( My school doesnt have one)</p>
<p>AcaDec is done by many states but I do not think it is as popular as FBLA and DECA esp in the east. Now, I would have said that it was just as popular before first visiting CC but I’ve seen so few people on CC doing it (and CC is probably one of the best samples of high-achieving HS students you can find) so I would say less popular</p>
<p>However, I’m not sure that AdComs will really be familiar with it enough in order to understand the type of dedication it requires. I spend ~35 hrs a week on it during NONcompetition weeks. During competition weeks I spend around 110 hours (which does include time at the competition site which includes over-night stays and “sleeping” aka cramming so that’s why 110 seems ridiculously high)</p>
<p>I know that seems like a lot of work for a single EC but I am passionate about it and am involved more extensively with it than probably 99% of competitors (ie I am captain, MVP, second in state, nats medals etc.)</p>
<p>But it is really really popular in CA…some schools own loft apartments where their kids can come and study…I use the supply closet at our school haha</p>
<p>Sophomore, if I could ask one thing, WHAT MAJOR IN COLLEGE? ( very important Q)</p>

<p>As a parent, my advice is to take it little easier on yourself. You are a very strong student and you have great ECs. My concern is that you are spreading yourself too thin and may crack under the pressure. For example, I don’t think it is necessary to self study for so many APs. Colleges expect you to take the hardest courses available at your school. They don’t penalize you if your school doesn’t offer APs. I think it’s great to self-study for the subjects that interest you, but junior year will be busy enough. </p>
<p>You will have a serious shot at the Ivy Leauge, but admissions can be unpredictable. I recommend that you visit some slightly less selective schools also and find some match and safety schools that appeal to you. Try to enjoy high school and don’t spend the next two years completely focused on getting into college.</p>
