Hoping for a Decent College for Computer Science Major with 2.9 GPA

I want to do Computer Science/Software Engineering, but my current GPA is 2.9. What are my chances at a California college? What are my chances at San Jose State University, I live 15 miles away from this.

Are you a Junior or a Transfer? If a Junior, what are your test scores?

Here is the a table for Freshman Eligibility index for all majors at SJSU
To calculate: (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math+CR) or (CSU GPA x200) + (ACT compx10)

For CS you need an EI of 4300/1031
For Software Engineering you need an EI of 3700/862

If you are a transfer, then you need the following GPA:
CS: 3.45
Software Engineering: 3.00

EI’s will change each year based on the in-coming class.

You should look at Sac State, Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, East Bay, Stanislaus, Fresno as possible alternate Cal States. Majority will have CS but only a few have Software Engineering. You can do a search on the CSU Mentor website for which campuses have your major.

Thank you much.

By chance, does Santa Clara University have a similar Eligibility Index? What is the minimum required for Computer Science admission at Santa Clara University? Thank you

Santa Clara is private so not only will GPA/Test scores/EC’s/Essays be considered also letters of recommendation. Only the Cal States (except SLO) use the EI for admissions in California.

Here is info from last years Freshman Class.

Fall 2014 Entering Class
Academics

Average GPA: 3.67
SAT Critical Reading (25th -75th percentile): 590-680
SAT Math (25th -75th percentile): 620-710
ACT Composite (25th -75th percentile): 27-32
Top 10% of Class: 54%
Top 25% of Class: 86%

Since CS is a very popular major, I would think you need to be at the average or above for a good chance at an acceptance but they also take into acount more than just GPA and test scores.

Thank you very much again.

You note you are 15 miles from SJSU. You may be considered a ‘local’ applicant and held to a lower admission standard than is reflected in the table linked above. As you’d guess, the Bay Area is divided among SJSU CSUEB, SFSU and Sonoma State. Take a look at this to see which campus is aligned with where you live.

If you are a local freshman applicant, SJSU may admit you as Undeclared with an Index of just 2900. You’d need to complete some pre-reqs and maintain a solid GPA but, switching isn’t difficult. You can read about it here:

CS is a competitive major at most schools. applying undeclared will probably improve your admission odds significantly. Most schools make declaring a major pretty simple.

Good luck
