I put this question in another forum but didn’t seem to be getting any replies hope this is the right place. Here goes I am currently a second year student at American River College a community college in Sacramento, California I will likely be here for another 2 or so years because of 2 factors 1 beings I’m starting in remedial math and English courses because of my low grades in high school, and 2 I changed my major at the end of last school year from music recording to philosophy. I am currently working on an associates in Social Science and plan on transferring (most likely to one of the local universities Sacramento State or UC Davis) to eventually double major in philosophy and theology(my reason for this is because of the career path I am going down Ive been considering joining the priesthood(catholic) for almost 2 years now) but I have been thinking about declaring a minor in one of the natural sciences(physics, astronomy or biology) in order to broaden my intellectual abilities would this be worth it considering the career path I’m thinking about and beyond that would it be worth it or would it just be a bunch of extra classes? another question which science field would be most closly related to philosophical thought in that sense if any? (fyi history is my second choice as a minor but the reason being it does not interest me as much is because of the lack of intellect that is persistent in philosophy theology and science history was actually my favorite subject in grade school just am not interested in studying it in college as much as the others)
I think that your finances will determine what you can do. Are you receiving state or federal grants for school? @Kelsmom can give you details, but from what I understand the number of semesters of aid is limited. You’ve already spent 2 years at a cc. If you’re getting aid and spend another 2 at the cc, I think you’ll have only 4 semesters of aid left. That means that after you transfer you’ll have 2 years to finish your degree before you have to start paying out-of-pocket. I don’t know if that’s possible with a double major and a minor. If your parents can pay for 6 or more years for your undergrad, then you can study what you want.
tuition for the community colleges is a bit tricky but no I have not been on “financial aid” as of so far because of my gpa coming out of high school and last year I had a rough year I got a few Ds mostly due to not understanding how to study because of things I missed in high school but hear is how payments have been so far year 1 I had no aid whatso ever it was all payed for by my father year 2 I qualified for the bog fee state waiver which is not “financial aid” in that sense it pays off the class fees while the books still cost on the same note there is no tuition for attending a community college other than class and book prices so from the sounds of it I should be good
