Hoping to get accepted, any chance?

Okay,

I'm currently enrolled and attending Houston Community College full time.

My GPA is 3.5/4.0 - 51hrs (although 28hrs of them are deemed as transferable, the rest were a HCC-ONLY class which doesn't transfer; the HCC-ONLY were the ones I took in HS)

Even though my transcript considers me a "sophomore"; I'm in my second semester in college due to taking dual credit classes in HS.

I applied to University of Houston, which I'm pretty sure I'll get accepted to the Cullen Engineer (By the way, is UH - Engineering any good).

I've also applied at UT- Austin, however I'm not feeling too good. I don't think I'll get accepted to the Cockrell school.

Reason why I want to go to UT-Austin is because I've done enough research to conclude it has perhaps the best Computer Engineer plan in Texas, I want "out" of Houston and want to feel independent, and I think it will be an excellent University Experience. If I don't get accepted to UT-Austin, I have two choices:

Attend another year in HCC

Go to UH and then transfer out (realistically speaking, if I attain a high GPA).

Would you guys recommend me sticking it out another year in HCC or going to UH and getting a B.S. in Computer Engineering (3yrs) OR transfer out within its first year and try UT-Austin again?

My goal and objective is to receive a B.S. in either UH or UT-Austin, then a MS in Engineer in either of those schools. (I know, I dream a lot lol)

I think you should go to UH for a year and then transfer out.

UH engineering is not bad. But A&M is better, have you considered applying there?

If your grades in calculus and physics are good, then you have a great shot at Cockrell. Cockrell is a lot more willing to accept transfers (unlike McCombs) because many people drop out after the first year.

From a fellow community college student to another, Welcome! I too took classes at HCC. If you don’t mind, could you list the classes in which you will be transfering along with the grade you received in each? I can make a more accurate prediction based on that. I transfered in Cockrell with a 3.72 overall GPA but, my core classes (sciences, maths, ect.) averaged out to about a ~3.5.

As for deciding which college to attend. That is really up to you. An ABET engineering degree is an engineering degree regardless of where you receive it. However, UT offers better professors and career opportunities. That said, if you are looking to stay in Texas post-graduation, attending UH might not be a bad choice especially since you can save tons of money by living with your parents.

I wouldn’t waste the time, money and effort to transfer to UH and end up transfering out to UT. If you don’t end up getting into UT, just stick it out at HCC. Eventually you will be able to get in if you put effort into it.

Also, like navyarf said, A&M is a great school for engineering. I hear its CS program (and probably its computer engineering) is great. Afterall, Bjarne Stroustrup is an A&M faculty member (inventor of C++).

See I have considered A&M, however I went on a school trip there with my HS last year and I really didn’t “feel” the vibe that I got with UT. Although I know the Engineering program is better than UH, I wouldn’t really like to live there in college station.

I will post up my grades ands classes when I get on my computer. (Using phone at the moment)

I agree with ampzor. If ultimately you want to end up at UT, if you dont get accepted this time around, just wait it out for one more year at HCC. It’ll be tough for you getting acquainted with UofH’s teaching style, campus, and other factors which may decrease your chances towards a better GPA. At HCC, you already know what to expect and are acquainted with the way things work.

Good luck :)

Basically I f’d up in some classes because I took them in HS, and I was not motivated to get good grades, I was slacking off too much and I was just in a “whatever mode” that’s why I have some C’s on there.

Classes I took in High School as Dual Credit:

CPMT 1449 Computer Networking Technology Fall 2007 A 4.00
CPMT 2433 Computer Integration Spring 2007 A 4.00

Classes I’ve actually taken at HCC as a Full Time Student:

HIST 1302 U.S. History after 1877 Summer 2009 A 3.00 Transferable*
GOVT 2302 Amer Gov Nat/Sta/Local II Fall 2009 A 3.00 Transferable*

MATH 1314 College Algebra Fall 2009 A 3.00 Transferable*
CHEM 1411 General Chemistry I Fall 2009 A 4.00 Transferable*

And classes I am currently taking:

CHEM 1412 General Chemistry II Spring 2010 4.00 Transferable*
DRAM 1310 Introduction to the Theatre Spring 2010 3.00 Transferable*
ECON 2302 Prin Eco-Microeconomics Spring 2010 3.00 Transferable*
MATH 1324 Finite Math with Applications Spring 2010 3.00 Transferable*

I KNOW for sure I’m going to get an A on both Drama, Finite Math, and Econ. I’m studying my a** off for Chem II to make an A.

Also, do Universities look at the Transferable classes as a sole GPA and then the actual accumulative GPA as a different one? As in two different GPA’s?

I read or I was told (don’t remember) somewhere or by someone that you have to have a Min. GPA of 3.0 for Engineering in Math, Science and English. IF that’s true, or if its the case then my grades shouldn’t be a problem. Although I can’t confirm this because I can’t find it on their website. Although UH has something similar to that as well and their Min. GPA for Engineering is 2.5.

Some advice? :frowning: I don’t want to stay in HCC again :frowning: it lacks professors and the student social life is almost non-existent (I’m very social), and classes I want and if you see the classes I have taken I’m if not 1 or 2 semesters from completing my basics.

Also, another reason why I haven’t taken Calculus yet, is not because I scored low, its because damn HCC has a process where you HAVE to take Col. Alg THEN you take either Finite or Plane Trig (which Plane Trig doesn’t transfer so Its a waste of my money) and THEN you can finally take PreCal or Calc if you believe your ready. I spoke to a counselor about testing out BUT they said no because the other classes are Pre-Reqs. Ugh HCC you’ve done it again.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade but, UT probably won’t accept you for the Fall 2010. From thier engineering transfer guide [2008-2010 TCCN/UT Engineering Transfer Guide](http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/tccn/current/engineering.html) :

You didn’t rain on my parade, I was expecting that. Although I thought could give it a try seeing how other people enter the liberal arts college and take the calc class and transfer from within UT

I can’t help you with your decision on which school to attend next year, but UH has an excellent engineering program. Their computer science program is also outstanding. UH is a much better school than most people give them credit for.

I’m not saying UH is a bad school, its more of my drawback if I don’t get into UT. I don’t really want to spend another year in HCC.

I have been to the UH campus, I’ve spoken to some Engineer Students and they really recommend me to come to UH. I don’t doubt them, however being that UT is much more known in TX and in the US, I’ll go for that. I’m not being shallow either.

For the simple fact, that IF I do get accepted to UT and graduate with a B.S in C.E then my chances of getting a job in or out of state are higher than for those from UH, depending on the employer of course (along with gpa, resume, etc etc etc)

Yeah you will def get into COLA. Your stats are better than many of the kids I know who transfered into COLA. However, you might not want to take physics at UT. It is quite draining.

ampzor, I know what you mean. I’m going to take summer classes again at HCC just to get more classes out of the way. Next on my class list: Physics. :)

So would you say that getting into COLA and then transfering from within is a better shot than getting into Cockrell as outside transfer? I mean can’t I apply to transfer every semester? And I start a fresh GPA so that might help if I get excellent grades.

My UT Applications was First choice Cockrell College, second choice COLA.

Yeah, that sounds like a good approach. If you are really really really set on UT, definately apply to COLA as you will most likely get in and you can start building your UT GPA early. I think I had too much transfer credit coming into UT, now I have no classes to pad my GPA. Fortunantly, I made some pretty stellar grades last semester but the stress was terrible as all I thought of was “competing” against my fellow classmates. Maybe it was because I was in a new enviornment, who knows.

I know a few kids who are in the liberal arts program whom were looking to transfer into engineering last semester. I have no idea how that went for them. But, I am sure if you maintain your grades, you should have no problem transfering in. Good luck!

Wherever you end up next year, just be very careful about the classes you register for. If your ultimate goal is to end up in Cockrell, be sure to look at the degree plan and choose your classes accordingly. One thing I have noticed about engineering is that the degree plans are not very flexible, they are very structured. If you miss taking a class when you should, it could be a prerequisite for another the next semester. You could get your whole sequence messed up and it could really slow you down. Good luck!

I’m hoping to get in for civil engineering. My GPA 3.56, I have 73 hours (48 transferable). I have taken Calc I and II, Phys I with A’s. And I’m taking Statics, Phys II, And Calc III right now. What do you think my chances are?

You have a decent chance. You’ve got all the prerequisites down along with good grades in them as well.

Uh dude, sorry but this is my thread.

@Navyarf, did you direct that to me? or mr.kevrey (thread stealer)

To your thread stealer. LOL.

Any input on mine? Not the thread stealer >.< lol
