Hoping to transfer here, admission inquiry..

The first semester of my freshman year, I failed a class. However, I retook the class this past semester, and received an A. Now obviously, the F sunk my fall semester's GPA. Will this effect my chances?

I have spoken to the admission's department and they have told me that as long as I maintain a 2.7 gpa or higher each semester, I have good standing to trasnfer in. My college GPA allows the A to overide the F, but the F stays on my transcript.

help?

In all honesty don’t worry too much about it if you did re-take the class and you have kept your GPA above what UMass is looking for which is the 2.7. I was worried about the same thing - I had a full 2 years of medical issues which DRASTICALLY effected my grades and forced me to re-take them in following semesters. All of those grades remained on my transcript but the admissions office also looks to see if you retook the class(es).

When I spoke to an admissions counselor after the UMass tour he told me that they look to see that you re-take classes you either failed or did poorly in. It shows integrity. And if you keep your GPA at the 2.7 minimum for transfers you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. I was scared to death because of the poor grades from those classes on my transcript and I was accepted as a transfer to UMass. My GPA (after re-taking what I needed to) is a 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and I can promise I had quite a few more classes than just one. So deep breaths and you should be fine. And if you’re worried you can always give admissions a call or shoot them an e-mail, the counselors are really friendly and helpful to students looking to transfer. (At least from my experience).
