Hoping to Transfer to UNC from West Point Chances?

Transferring From: United States Military Academy
Current Classification: Applying as a Sophomore
College GPA: 2.1
Major: War Peace and Defense
High School GPA: I believe it was around a 3.2 I graduated back in 2009
SAT (Reading and Math) : 1310
I have 2 very strong recommendations, one from a UNC grad school graduate.

I spent almost 2 years working in sales, after high school
Enlisted in the army after that and served for a year and a half with the 82nd Airborne
No Deployments, but I have multiple badges and awards for service
Nominated to go to West Point by my Company Commander as a direct admit cadet
I'm still a nationally registered EMT and will be volunteering as an EMT in Chapel Hill if I am admitted

I know based on my GPA I don't stand a chance, but I have heard that schools tend to look at military academy transcripts a little differently, and look very favorably on military service. I am also from North Carolina right near UNC, I'm not sure if that makes any difference or not.

I doubt that your chances are very good. UNC is one of the best, most competitive, universities in America and, as you point out, your college GPA is not good. UNC-Chapel Hill needs to believe that you can make decent grades. That GPA probably won’t convince them.

Still, APPLY ANYWAY. Otherwise you will never know. Also apply to NC State and maybe UNC-Asheville or other smaller state colleges. Unless you changed your residency while in the army, you will at least get in-state tuition.

Apply to at least five different colleges which you think you might like. At least five!
