i'm a high school senior who's planning to major in economics while doing pre-med. i'm trying to decided between carnegie-mellon(h&ss), johns hopkins and the university of rochester. i can't decide between the three and would really appreciate any suggestions.

Sometimes it is personal preference and a gut feeling. Did you visit the schools? D visited JHU and decided not to apply. She also visited and applied to both CMU and Rochester. She was accepted to both. Now I know this reason may sound trite to some, but when she visited JHU, the student cafeteria smelled more like a hospital cafeteria. That just seemed to turn her off immediately. She had other schools that she liked better than JHU, so it never made her list of schools to apply to. She's now a freshmen at Cornell ILR as she thought the Labor Relations program interested her more than studying psychology/cognitive science. If she continued to be interested in cog sci, she probably too would have decided between CMU or Rochester. They are both great schools. The U of R Medical school has a wonderful rep. and I believe they do take a good # of U of R undergraduates so if you are seriously deciding to do pre-med that might tip in favor with U of R (or JHU). You can't go wrong with any of these 3 schools. Good luck. I just noticed your name-Violinist. At U of R you may be able to take classes at the Eastman school of Music. My friends son is at U of R and is taking classical guitar lessons at Eastman. PS- his sister is a freshman an CMU. (She did not want to go to the same school as her brother. They are both happy at their schools.

I'd go U of R , surviving in the rigorous premed environment of JHU is very hard. U of R has just as good of a premed program as all three (well just as good as JHU, better than CMU) and great resources/research that you wont get at JHU. JHU will have the undergrads doing mostly data-entry and robot-work.

Anything business related like econ would be strongest at CMU. Also you might not want to be in with a throng of competitive premeds you'd have to deal with at JHU or (to a lesser extent) U of R. Guaranteed you do reasonably well at CMU you'll be fine with med school admissions.
