Hopkins Financial Aid Problems

I was supposed to be a sophomore at JHU this school year, but I'm unable to continue at Hopkins because of my financial situation.

I should have been aware of my situation last year, but there were problems with my FAFSA and we did not get it submitted on time. Because of this, we understood that I would not recieve any aid for the 2008-09 year. We decided to deal with those consequences, but we also thought that I would be eligible for financial aid in subsequent years. After a few weeks of dealing with people in the financial aid office and Dean Burger, we finally discovered that even if we hadn't had problems with the FAFSA, I wouldn't have been eligible for aid because of my parents' income. Our EFC is too high. However, my parents can not realistically provide me with anything near the calculated EFC. I would have to take approximately 130,000k in loans in order to finish my undergraduate education at Hopkins.

I am posting this thread to try to alert possible Hopkins students to the gap in financial aid at Hopkins. From what I can tell, lower to middle income students at Hopkins are provided with adequate financial aid, and there are plenty of students at Hopkins whose parents can easily afford to pay the tuition outright. However, there are many upper middle class students (myself included) who are not eligible for financial aid but also can not realistically afford to pay for Hopkins.

JHU is an amazing school, and my freshman year could not have been better. I hate that I have to leave. I wish that my family had been better informed about financial aid when I was applying to schools, so that I would have known about Hopkins's policies earlier and would not be stuck in this situation. It is my fault that I'm facing this situation, but I do not believe that means that JHU's financial aid policies are equally beneficial for all students. It hurts to think that there are other students in my financial situation who worked hard throughout high school to get into a school like Hopkins but won't be able to afford it.

Sorry to hear this. This is not unique to Hopkins however as the FAFSA uses a federal formula etc. Small, private education is expensive and not all families are willing to pay for it because it is a very large investment. Nonetheless, your education will be what you make of it so not to worry. There are many great colleges out there. Best of luck.

Would anyone know if the financial aid calculator on JHU’s site is accurate?

WealthofInfo, that was kinda obnoxious. If you cannot afford to pay something, you’re not choosing against payment.

The finaid calculator is pretty accurate for me.
