I recently got accepted into both schools. My major will probably be economics/business. I know Emory is very well known for their business school while Hopkins is known for the Medical angle. Hopkins has such a GREAT name and reputation though especially here in the Northeast (from New York). What should I do?

Can I go far in the business world with an economics degree from Hopkins?

Well, let's see. A formerly poor boy from Boston went to Hopkins (on scholarship). He's now the Mayor of New York. Along the way, he he made a few $billion in a little company called Bloomberg. I guess he did okay.

ladygirl: There's a man whose been in the news a lot lately named Timothy Geithner who got his M.A. in international economics at JHU...you might have heard of him.

Here is the deal. Johns Hopkins is arguably slightly better known overall as a school. Emory has a better business school. So, ask yourself this. Do you want people to be more astounded by your school choice, or do you want a better job? Believe it or not, some will choose the former.

Even though JHU is considered the "better" school, I still think it's okay to consider these two peers. So, just go where you're more comfortable at...

It's all about fit. Visit and see which one you like best. I think Hopkins takes the cake on quality and diversity but that doesn't mean it's right for you. Atlanta is a cool city so don't overlook Emory.

I don't understand the question. I am unaware of JHU mailing "likely letters" so the only way one would be accepted is through binding ED. So how is there a choice?

I have the same question as 'roberthhid'...
How do you know you have been accepted to JHU?
I thought JHU will announce on April 1.
Did you receive the "likely" letter from JHU?

I am also debating between these 2 schools. However, my major will most likely be Chemistry or BioChem engineering and Political Science (double major). Emory has an exciting appeal to me, but I am concerned with the opportunity cost of not going to JHU. (by that i mean the recommendation the school will give you for Med school.) JHU did not give off a bad vibe, it just didn’t seem extremely interesting. HELPPP!

I’m not really sure what grade deflation means but I can tell you that if you work hard, you will do well. It’s that simple. If you want to be sure that you won’t be stuck with a 2.5 GPA, put in the work.

my sister is going to emory ED this year
the campus is incredible and the people there are so nice
and obviously business is their claim to fame

my first choice is hopkins
i think there are more opportunities for anything math or science related
especially in independent research
but hopkins is a more rigorous school, according to everyone i’ve talked to

in my completely biased manner, i’d vote hopkins.

Yeah Hopkins has a great name, that’s if your going to major in a biological or chemical type of major. If your are not really, then I would choose another school because its like going to Harvard to study a major that isn’t even known to Harvard. I would go to Emory because you most likely be around kids that are similiar to your interest because Hopkins kids are either music or medical science. Also grad school look at applications with the vigor of your college curriculum. If your undergrad was at a school is a major that is weak at that school, then the “popular name” of that school is like defaced

Excuse me? I can assure you, even in the programs for which Hopkins is not, say top 10, Hopkins’ name carries a lot of weight. I’m in the math department at Hopkins at in the last few years, they’ve had people get into Stanford, Berkeley, Chicago, Columbia,…

Ladygirl: There is a new program at Hopkins called financial economics that is supposed to be outstanding. Take a look at that. The economics major is excellent and plenty of people go into finance…more and more.
