Hopkins vs. Wake Forest

My daughter has been accepted to both Hopkins and Wake Forest. She is interested in majoring in some type of English/English Literature/Creative Writing field. Obviously JHU has a top creative writing program and is academically ranked higher than Wake Forest, but besides the pure academics, I'd appreciate thoughts on both schools. I realize that they are very different in geography and student body.

i think NC has the better weather, but not by much. The one definite edge Wake Forest has on Hopkins is Sports (specifically bball, although wake basketball isn’t doing so well right now). However, Hopkins offers more diversity (it isn’t close to 80% white like Wake), academics (the entering freshman class profile between Hopkins and wake are incomparable), and prestige obviously (JHU is known internationally. Wake, while a good school, is known really only in the south-east (it’s also arguably only the fourth best undergrad in the state),. JHU also has smaller class sizes (allowing for more professor interaction and attention) and more of an urban city with more options. Your daughter was very fortunate to have gotten in. I think she’ll have more opportunities coming out of Hopkins because of the connections she will gain. If she wants to distinguish herself nationally with her degree after graduating, come to Hopkins. Don’t miss out.

Apples and oranges. With no disrespect intended to Wake–it is not a school that Hopkins competes with for students very often. Duke is, and a search on CC will come up with many Hopkins/Duke comparisons. But frankly, I wouldn’t know where to start in comparing Hopkins and Wake because, other than both being generally classified as research universities, they pretty much have nothing in common.

I agree with the above comments. Johns Hopkins Humanities programs are world class and attract incredible students and faculty from across the globe. To study under the professors at Hopkins really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

So in summary: No disrespect to wake - disrespect to wake

Both Wake and JHU are good schools and I think that cost/fit should come into play. I would lean for JHU for two reasons though:

Creative writing is a fantastic program, and related classes in philosophy, poli sci, history, will be strong.

JHU is working a lot to become a leader in the humanities. Examples: the expensive Gilman Hall renovation
