Okay, so I was just notified that I won a Horatio Alger Hardship Award. I have already sent in my applications. How prestigious is this award, and should I notify the colleges I'm applying to that I received it? How should I do this?

I should mention that the criteria for selection were:

demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
strength of character
financial need
a good academic record
commitment to pursue a college education; and
a desire to contribute to society

I'm not sure how big a deal this is or how many people get these awards, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How did you find out you got the award?

I got an e-mail from the scholarship association and accepted the award online today. Did you apply?

Wow, sounds like a really awesome award! Go ahead and tell your colleges. :)

Yeah I applied. So you won the $10,000 one? I thought they were going to announce them next week.

hmm...is this award 10,000 or 1000? I am a finalist and the award is 1000. I havent notified them of my desire to accept this award yet. And if I notify colleges, this might improve my chances but would likely reduce my financial aid, right? Should I still do so anyway?

bump...
up...

I think that's the $1000 if you are a finalist. The $10,000 is for national scholars. I think you should accept the award, but call your college first and ask them.

when do i know if i am a national scholar? And is there any paperwork or recs i need to send in?

I just got my phone call, and i won the National Award, 10,000$. I am super happy, and hope this will help me on my college apps.
I dont know about a 1000$, maybe thats the local competition, but I do know that if they fly you out to DC, and offer you the 10,000$ your one of 107 in the nation to be a National Scholar
