Horatio Alger Hardship Award

Hey, I have just been notified that I received a Horatio Alger Hardship Award. Is this a big deal? I've already sent in my applications, but should I notify my colleges that I received this award?

The criteria for selection were:

demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
strength of character
financial need
a good academic record
commitment to pursue a college education; and
a desire to contribute to society

I'm not sure how many people win. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Does anyone know?

Oh yeah, the website is horatioalger.org if anyone is interested.

Yes, it is a Very BIG Deal. Congratulations! Puff yourself up and pat yourself on the back. Your hard work and perseverance does reward handsomely. The Horatio Alger concept. There is Hope and Dreams and Good Fortune in America.

Did you receive an actual award offer? I'd use their assistance and leverage the honor into a paid education, except for the Stafford amount.

Thank your advisers and recommendators.

I am a finalist too? Are you a finalist or scholar? On the email, it said I was a finalist and also a recipient. So does finalist= scholar= recipient? And is this a hardship award or merit award? I did overcome hardships, but my merits are definitely very appealing.

Should we notify colleges of this award if they are likely to reduce our financial aid?
