Hi, I've done poorly in high school, but I have picked up over the years. I live in Missouri, am from an upper middle class family, and was born in India. I'm currently a senior, and will be applying at the end of this year. (Is that bad?)I go to a very competitive public school. I plan on majoring in biochemistry or chemical engineering. Here's what I've accomplished (lmao not much):

Freshman year: 2.46 Total GPA / No Ec's/Advanced/Honors classes
Sophomore year: 3.54 Total GPA/ No Ec's/Advanced/Honors classes
Junior year: 3.75 Total GPA/JV Tennis/Honors Alg II
Senior year: 4.66 Total GPA/Precalc, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP lit, C++
Cumulative: 3.40 by end of first semester this year, 3.6 by end of whole year.
Class Rank: Top 35% By end of first semester this year.
SAT: 2200/2400 - Not 2200 and 2400, just 2200 out of 2400
ACT: 26
SAT II: Chemistry 730, Math IIC 700, Literature 700
Recs: Decent

Guys please help me out. I have no direction in life right now whatsoever. I plan on applying to these colleges at the end of first semester:
Purdue University
University of Chicago at Urbana Champaign
University of Texas at Austin
University of Missouri at Rolla
Ohio State
University of Cincinnati
Are my chances good? I have no idea right now.. help me please!

I don't know about the other schools, but UIUC is pretty good. Its University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. The only U of C is in Chicago, and it's a private school.

If you were in state, UIUC would be a good match for you (but theres a huge disparage between your above-avg SATs and your mediocre ACTs), but I don't know about out of state (as in, the admissions requirements). UIUC's eng. department is also a bit harder to get into, but I know a lot of really smart kids who couldn't get into an Ivy or MIT/Caltech, and went there instead.

Also keep in mind the founder of AMD went to UIUC (albeit he was an in-state student).

I see... I've always known that my changes at UIUC were somewhat bleak due to my lack of EC's and the GPA, but in terms of Purdue and UC, would my changes be good there? I was hoping to have UC as my safety..

I dont want to discourage you from UIUC! There are tons of kids from our school (with SATs muuuch lower than yours) that get in there no problem. If you were in state, I'd say UIUC is a match, but idk the admissions standards for out of state.

Oh you didn't discourage me at all, don't worry, I've always known that school would be a reach for me. I've set my sights towards either Purdue or UC or UTA though for the most part. I just need to know if any of the schools I listed I can count on as safeties.

Guys I've seen that there are over seventy views but only one person replied.. it would really help with even a yes or a no.. I don't have a clue as where I'm headed.. help please?

I don't think you will get into Illinois or Texas OOS, considering only about 10% of Illinois and 5% of Texas' applicants are OOS. And your GPA would have to be spectacular to get in OOS there.

Don't apply to college at the end of the year. By that time, thousands of spots will already be taken, and you will have to be a very well qualified applicant to be accepted, which you aren't at many schools.

Don't even mention your ACT score to colleges.

Yes I was very afraid that applying late would be detrimental to my chances.. If I applied in the beginning of November, I would only have a 3.2 GPA.. and my senior grades wouldn't even show up. I'd only have that, my SAT 1, and my SAT 2'S to back me up.. wouldn't that put me in a bad position? I really was hoping to get into UC as a safety.. what do you guys think about that?

Try and focus on instate schools. The schools you're mentioning are all great for in-state but horrible for out-staters in terms of value. You're a virtual lock for missouri, and your chances at Purdue are pretty decent. You might also wanna think about the LAC route. The fact that you're a science major may be an advantage in admissions. LAC's tend to give greater weight to standardized tests. On the flip side, your lack of EC's will definitely hurt you...

Well I've tried to find schools with my intended major, but the ones that are of my caliber, such as Rolla, are ranked like 62 out of the nation which isn't that great. I've focused most of my sights on schools like Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, and Purdue, and I'd really like to know what my chances for those schools are.

actually uiuc is very competitive, and if you're not ranked in the top ten percent of your class it will be difficult to get into, esp becuase their engineering dept is so highly ranked. purdue and ohio state look like a match! goodluck.

Well I know that schools such as Purdue, UC, and OSU are easy to get into instate, but what about out of state? If I apply in early November, I'll only have a 3.2 GPA and my 4.66 won't even show up on the transcript.
