Hey everyone,
I've been a lurker around here for a while now, but I finally registered -- I guess acceptance to college makes one less reluctant to sign up.

Anyway, I was admitted to Georgetown College and I got my FinAid letter and ironically I haven't received my admission letter yet, but I logged into the gaap site and found out already. My main problem is my financial aid package. My FAFSA EFC was 8k, but Georgetown is expecting my family to pay 22k a year! There's no way we can handle this without taking out loans and stuff.. what do I do? :(

All help and ideas are appreciated greatly!
Thanks,

Sorry to hear that. I'm in the opposite boat as you (see my thread). Have you already sent in your taxes, because my GU EFC was the same as the FAFSA's . I wonder if that will dramatically change once I send in my taxes.

Yeah.. and I called today, they said that since my family has so many dependents, we're liable to receive increased tax breaks.. which is sort of ironic.. and b.s. if I may add.

Also, since my Dad works for the military, he gets untaxed income and apparently they jumped right on that as a "huge" source of income even though its hardly so.

And yes, Mellon Collie (Love the name, I'm a huge SP fan myself :P), I sent in my taxes, but GU said they look mainly at the CSS Profile info and since they're a private university, they have a legal right to not abide by the FAFSA numbers or something like that. Basically they told me they're free to charge whatever they'd like.

i'm scared as well. my fin aid package was a grand total of 6765...leaving my family to pay 38995, which is practicallly half of our yearly income. i don't know how we can possibly pay this amount. just thinking about it makes me nauseous.

i got good finaid, but i needed all i got. i am kind of scared though because i heard gtown screws you over on aid (eg increases loans through the roof) as you rise to soph, jun, senior.

I got a great financial aid package, however, my family needed it. I was worried I would not be able to afford Georgetown with the financial aid reputation it seems to have earned, but they have now made it very easy for my family to send me there. Also, one reason why a lot people did not receive the package they wanted or expected is because Georgetown takes into account home equity, an asset the FAFSA does not consider. This is probably why some people's Georgetown EFC is higher than their FAFSA's EFC.

Ok.....I'm seriously freaking out now. Why was my GU EFC the same as the FAFSA's if all of you are saying that they mainly look at the CSS Profile?........

Mine was bad too. I'm planning on talking with them about it, but not expecting much. I'm in the process of deciding whether its worth that much money.

Don't expect much. I'm finishing four years at Georgetown and the only aid I received was work-study. You can ask them to reconsider your package, but they rarely do so.

Has anybody gotten Georgetown to reconsider their package?

The Georgetown EFC is more than double my other school's EFC. Of course, we're talking the difference of a few thousand, which is not horrible compared to what others are getting, but... do you think I have a chance at getting them to reconsider? And is it worth the effort if they don't?

Georgetown is strapped for cash as it costs about 43 grand for everything a year. Georgetown tries to meet as much aid as they can, unfortunately their perception of things can be different from yours. You can always talk to Georgetown fin aid and if you have an extreme situation they might reconsider. Good Luck! BTW, there are some people here that pay very little, but many who pay full tuition. The financial aid really varies.
