I was accepted to harvard early last yr, and am doing really poorly at mit now. i feel that harvard would've been a better fit for me...wat are my chances of transferring now?

don’t know, its hard to say. how bad is bad?

you might have a chance if you have had a major change of heart - like you loved science, but now realize that russian literature is your calling…

the fact that you got in the first time definitely helps - but your gpa will hurt you unless you have a really good reason

what was the transfer acceptance rate last year? what were the college GPA’s for those accepted?

also, sleazybum, i agree that your chances will be related to your intended major.

Isn’t the first semester of MIT credit/no credit?

Talk to the people at MIT. I assure you, you are hardly the first student to struggle first semester. Depending on how you are doing, what courses, what grades, what intended major, etc, you may want to be less ambitious in course selection, rethink your academic plans, even take a semester off. Remember, MIT does not make mistakes in admissions, and the vast majority of people who matriculate end up graduating. But many take time off in the process.

Hard to know whether transfer to Harvard would even be a good idea, but terrible grades don’t help. If MIT is PF first semester, then there may not be any grades to show. Harvard does sometimes admit high school students for entrance a year later (i.e. graduate in 07, admitted to start in 08). I don’t know whether this might be an option for you.

MIT is P/F first semester, but as far as i know, that just means that letter grades dont appear on your transcript, they are however logged in MITs system and can be sent out upon your request.

since the schools are down the block from each other, harvard knows exactly how MIT works, and will probably request those letter grades from you.

if your gpa is bad it may cast some doubt upon your ability to do well in college - so you need to have a REALLY good reason for what happened, i think.

If you’re talking about an actual bad GPA – like under 3.0 – then there is, for all intents and purposes, no hope, and your major does not matter.

How are you doing bad with P/F and grade forgiveness the first year?

The grades actually exist; they just aren’t shown on the transcript. If you want to transfer, you have to reveal them.
