I am a high school senior. I would really want to go to Azusa Pacific. It is the only school I want to apply to. What worries me is that I have a cumulative 2.5 GPA. I got a 1180 in the SAT. I recently took the ACT which I think I did better. I have taken 3 years of French but I also know Spanish. I have a medal for more than 100 service hours. I'm currently taking College Prep math and English. I've also done 2 years of track and field. I have been in two clubs. I am also Christian (APU is a Christian school). I want to major in nursing (RN) to become a Neonatal nurse. So I would really want to get accepted but will I? Will they accept me?

Just to be clear, is that SAT out of 1600 or 2400?

I would say high match

Honestly, I would suggest you go to CC to increase your GPA. You’re a senior with a C average and you want to tackle a difficult and competitive major.

Your GPA for the nursing program is too low (see the link). You have to remember that your peers are getting 4.0’s and 2200’s on their SAT’s. Is it just that the coursework is too difficult for you? Did you choose not to study?

Nursing requires lots of math and science coursework. Neonatal internships are difficult to get but with your Spanish skills, if you speak **advanced Spanish<a href=“professional%20level%20and%20not” title=“pocho” or “pueblo”>/b it would be a plus.

If you are an Underrepresented Minority, you might be forgiven your grades, but you’d have to show some prowess in an academic area; the minimum GPA for that university is 3.0 and the average student gpa is 3.61. Additionally, the cost to attend will be very expensive since you aren’t eligible for merit scholarships because of your grades.

Freshman minimum admission standards:
[Admission Standards - Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Azusa Pacific University](Apply to APU - Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Azusa Pacific University)

Additional School of Nursing requirements:[Admission - Nursing, B.S. (BSN) - Azusa Pacific University](http://www.apu.edu/nursing/undergraduate/nursing/admission/)

So, that’s why I would suggest a CC first, to have you become adjusted to earning decent grades to get into a nursing program.

Thank you. I do speak Spanish really well. It is my first language. Should I still try to apply? I might be able to increase my gpa this year. And what if I get a good score in the ACT? Would that increase my chances. I don’t want to disappoint my parents by going to CC. :(

1.) There is nothing wrong with going to a CC. Many students are doing this because they can’t really afford to have ridiculous loans that have outrageous fees, especially in California and specifically LA. At the end of their education, they have graduated from their universities making the same amount of money but not paying off those expensive loans.

2.) I am a native Spanish speaker and speak it (supposedly) really well but I also took advanced conversational spanish in college, with “medical” Spanish, because I knew I would need it. I got into my university because I had good grades, a decent SAT with pretty good English composition skills along with hundreds of volunteers hours, Varsity sports and great letters of recommendation. That was years ago. Now, the colleges are more competitive.

I hate to be blunt but honestly, you have already disappointed your parents with a 2.5 GPA, so the CC may be your only option. Even being an URM wont get you past that GPA and SAT score. University level coursework is faster, harder and more competitive, so if you have scraped by with a “C” in high school, you will be devastated by the instructional level of university coursework, especially in nursing, with your math and chem course requirements. They intentionally have “weeder” courses that weed out students who can’t cut it, and those students that typically have weak study skills eventually drop out.
(FWIW: All three of my Mexican-American kids were honors students with decent SAT scores-son missed a perfect SAT by one question, so I know it’s doable!)

You might want to try several Cal State Schools, don’t just apply to one school. SDSU has a great nursing program and looks to admit URM students, but again, that GPA and SAT is going to hurt you. Unless you have a compelling reason why your grades are so low- illness, etc. I don’t see Azusa Pac admitting you. They want to get ranked as a good school, so they admit students with high GPA’s. Plus, did you look at the cost? AP costs $30,000 with tuition and room. Can your parents afford that? Just being honest.

So I just found out I got this semester a 3.3 gpa. So with my 2.5 gpa plus that what is my gpa now? Will this help me for Azusa?

There are GPA calculators online.
Assume that:
A = 4.0
B= 3.0
C=2.0
D = 1.0
F=0
