Hey this is my first post on here. Kind of nervous since everyone seems to have a 4.0 and crazy EC's...

Anyways I goofed off in highschool MAJORLY. I graduated with a weighted GPA of 2.1

I'm now in Community College and will be applying to apply to transfer with about a 3.7-3.8 soon with 47 credits. I have work experience and some EC things in my major of interest. I plan on applying to transfer as a Political Science Major. I will also have 2 pretty strong letters of recommendations from my English and Political Science Professors.

Do any of you know how I'd stack up in trying to get into:

University of Southern California
Pepperdine
U of Mich.
George Washington Univ.
American Univ.
Georgetown Univ.
Cornell
Brown
NYU
U Miami
Claremont Mckenna College
U of Pitt (in-state)
UNC

I also haven't taken the ACT/SAT and Georgetown requires it for transfers. Do you think I have a reasonable shot of getting in if I applied? If not, I don't want to waste my time studying for the SAT or ACT just to have no chance due to my high school GPA.

So I'm basically asking how messed up am I as a transfer to semi-nice schools because of my high school GPA? Also, if you have any college recommendations it'd be nice to hear them.

Should I mention the bad GPA in my commonapp? And if so, any advice on how to approach it?

Thanks for any help!

If you have attended college for a couple of semesters (or more) then your high school transcript will not be important. Top universities will look at the breadth and depth of college work. So, as long as you did well enough in pre calculus / calculus and statistics to meet distribution requirements you have a shot. Although, getting into Ivies and Claremont would also require some amazing ECs.

Cornell, Brown, and Georgetown are going to be ridiculously difficult to be honest. I’m also considering Pepperdine, USC, and Claremont.

The others on your list are at least moderately ok in terms of acceptance.

I would say you absolutely have a chance at NYU, GWU, and American! Brown, Georgetown, Cornell and UNC out of state are difficult to get into, although not impossible. Good luck!

and they’re expensive!

Thanks for the feedback!
Anyone else?

I’d say you already have a pretty good grasp of your chances. Did you go straight to community college out of high school, or do you have significant work experience in between? I expect to be in a fairly similar position in a year or two, that’s why I ask. I’m very curious to see how admissions goes for you. Good luck!

Dude you’re GPA is solid. I would say you have a great shot at UCs, especially UCSD, Irvine, Davis. I was like you. I goofed off in high school and barely managed to graduate. I stepped it up in college and transferring this fall! Goodluck!!! You will succeed my friend.

thanks @UCLABruin225. I don’t live in California though so getting into most UC’s (at least the ones I’d like to go to) would be pretty difficult for me. Congrats with your transfer!

anyone else want to chime in?
