Horrible SATs, but AMAZING extracurriculars! CHANCES?

Okay, I just got my SAT IIs and I want to cry. It was my last test before applying (except stand by, which I am considering) and I feel like I lost any chances (if there was at all!) shooting for Yale.

SAT II:
Korean 790
Writing 630
Math IIc 600

SAT 1300 (both M and V 650)

ACT: 30
Essay: OK, still revising
Awesome recommendations (one full-length letter from the Governor)

....But I have very good ECs, the only thing left to save me! Do I have any chance at all?? I know people really hate "DO I HAVE A CHANCE??" posts, but I could really use some feedback. Should I even bother applying?

I don't know how to respond to chances threads... there are others who specialize in that. my advice is that you still have the month of december to do anymore testing.

the governor? as in the governor of a state? bc if the governor actually knows you then you can expect a nice boost there.

Eh, not so fast. I remember (it was either Harvard or Yale...but I think Yale) said that they dont care if it's a letter from the president himself, they'll look at it like any other letter or reccomendation. Of course, you have to wonder how much truth there is to what they say.........

Yeah, i'm in his "youth cabinet" so he is writing me a recommendation letter. I hope it helps, I need all the help i can get. Do you think that 600 will ruin me? I don't have another chance to retake it.

What are these amazing extracurriculars of which you speak?

Well, I guess not that great compared to some people on this forum, but I have over 1500+ community service, a strong service project i founded, national science winner, "future problem solving" international, intern at emergency room this year, intern at a trauma 1 hospital last year, state piano, many, many, many ECs at school including high officer positions (includng student body), governor's cabinet, leadership program at the chamber of commerce, ummmm that kinda stuff, haha even the "water conservation awareness" program. Violin and piano for over 10 years, oh, and i live by myself for my senior year because my dad's job was transferred to Austin (which is probably going to be my essay topic).

nothing spectacular...Yale is the only "reach" school I'm applying to. I know it is nothing compared to what Yale students have done, but I'll just hope for the best.

Sounds really wonderful...I think that if you write a fantastic essay, it will compensate for your scores

thanks, bebere87, i'm writing an essay right now, but it sounds too "elementary." It doesn't sound "intelligent" at all....its funny but too "unphillosophical."

I had that problem when I first started writing my essays...until I realized that not every winning essay is intelligent or philosophical, it just does a great job of showing who you are. If you are a funny person, write a funny essay, and don't overthink it based on your conception of what a good essay should be.

I wouldn't worry about your essay being "unphilosophical". Mine are pretty straightforward. I don't sound like an idiot in them, but I'm definitely not throwing around ten-dollar SAT words either. For me, it's more important that I sound like myself than some super-genius that I'm not.

They have your test scores and transcript to measure the realm academia. It's up to your essays to show everything else.

true, true, thanks for all your imput guys! I truly appreciate it! ;)

One more thing...Should I send my SAT and SATII's at all?? 30 looks a whole lot better than a 600 (27 percentile!!!) in Math 2c and a 630 (57th percentile) in writing. Man, the sentence corrections really messed me up on the writing...However, I did get a 790 in Korean with listening, which is a good score (can you believe 790 is still a 59th percentile?)

I'm not an expert but I probably wouldn't.

bump bump bump

I agree with Jill. A 30 ACT (which converts to a 1340) is much better, especially since the percentile for the SAT II Korean isn't that impressive.
