Horrible stats...where can I go?

I totally screwed up in HS. Went to private school all my life, then entered public CA hs. Total Shock. Way to easy, didn't think I needed to try. I am really smart. (trying not to brag, but people regard me as highly intellectual) frustrated teachers by not trying. They urged me to apply myself but i didn't give a rats ass. After 1st semester of JR year, I decided to apply myself. I became a huge victim of bullying and completely shut down. The last place I wanted to be was school. I debated homeschooling, but it wasn't for me. Stuck it out. Summer I took two classes..Gov and Econ. I did as amazing as my teachers told me I could. I ended up having the highest grades in each class. I wish I would have had the same focus for my entire hs career, but oh well. This experience has taught me a lot. Because of it I have matured greatly.

In my ec's every program I have worked with, I made a huge positive impact. I turned the programs back to their former glory. Focused on my ECs when I should have focused more on school. The work that I did in my EC's shows what kind of person I am, and how I can effect the world. I have to emphasize this on my essays.

I don't even know what schools will accept me. I wanted to go to CMC, but that is an incredible reach. My econ teacher (CMC) grad is good friends with Adam Miller the associate Dean of Admission. I have a meeting with him on Tues. Doubt I will get in.

Can you guys give me a few options on where to look at. I like small academic schools with a good reputation. Doesn't have to be the same caliber as CMC, but close will do.

Do you guys have any advice.

Sorry if this was crazy long. Thanks for your responses.

awww im sorry you had to go through that with the bullying. (and the injury! that sucks)
you have an upward trend in grades so that should help, and you are taking a lot of challenging classes so that is good too. you need to emphasize what an effect you have had on the ecs you are involved in, that seems like a strength for you. also, get that sat score up! you seem really determined, which is good. i would apply early decision somewhere, that would help your chances, and write some awesome essays. also, while CMC may be your dream, there are plenty of smaller colleges out there that are not so selective. check out some of those, you might find a place you like to apply to as a safety/match. good luck and don’t stress too much! :)

I am no expert in chancing, but I believe what you can do now is to really study on the SAT, and hopefully reach 2000+, it would be a lot easier for you to apply for college. I am getting some friend of mine to help chance this.

Thanks guys for your reply.

i am at a total loss for this entire process. Its so confusing. I feel like I have no options.

look into reed

may be a bit of a reach, not as much as cmc though

or maybe it is, i don’t know

Thanks for your response. I’ll look into that school.

Reed seems to be a reach for me:(

Bullying can explain a part of your story, but you had no excuse for not trying. CA state schools should suffice. Maybe UCD, UCSB or UCSD?

State schools really don’t appeal to me. I don’t want to be a number. Even though I live in California where the state schools are top notch, they have a lot of issues.

just look through the USN&WR liberal arts school rankings and look a little bit further down the list than CMC.

Thats a great idea! Thanks so much.

What exactly do you want to major in?

pitzer, for example. it’s pretty local too!

I want to major in biomedical sciences…My overall goal is to do research in regenerative medicine/genetics.

I’m not sure if I would fit in at Pitzer, plus the daily reminder of not being good enough for CMC would not be fun. Then again, I can take classes there and be apart of their joint science program…

and what’s your race?

You have a 3.34 UW [if econ and gov were only 1 semester]. How is that horrible? No, its not, at all. I can suggests a lot of schools but you’d be better off researching what you like. Raise your SAT and you have a chance at some of the top 50 schools.

Did you ever hear of U of The Pacific? I love it and its relatively easy to get in.

i’m white.

I have heard of the U of P, but I want to stay far away from there. One of the main people that bullied me (used to be a close friend of mine) is going there next fall. It would be a little weird if I followed him there, but thanks for your suggestion, and for calculating my uw gpa.

Your stats aren’t as awful as you think they are. You have lots of EC’s which will be very helpful. You’ve taken lots of AP classes and made two 4’s. If you can bring your SAT scores up past 2000 you could get into some pretty good schools. You just need to have really good essays and recommendations.
