So just like the other stupids out there I got out of high school with an acceptable GPA (3.2), continued on to cc and lost my MIND. W's, F's, you name it, I did it. I try not to give excuses for the F's on my transcript (5 to be exact), because I'm embarassed, but I know I'm not stupid which is why when I moved to California I enrolled at SMC and made the conscious decision to be a grown up. So far it's been going well.

SMC
A's: 8 out of 8! As far as I'm concerned that wont be changing anytime soon. I'm going for straight a's all the way through.

My plan is to apply to UCLA (my DREAM school) for transfer and hope that they pay more attention to the hard work I've been doing for the past year as a adult, as opposed to the stupid decisions I made when I was a kid. I do realize that those f's will hurt me... bad, but I just need a little insight. Is there any hope, at all? How much do transcripts from a previous cc matter to schools like UCLA? I also wonder if I am eligible for the guaranteed transfer SMC has with UCLA with such a poor performance at my last school? If it doesn't work out I suppose I have no one to blame but myself, and UC San Diego won't be so bad.

You should look into signing a TAG with some of the mid-tier UCs (Davis, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Irvine); this is the only real guaranteed transfer, and it doesn't apply to Berkeley or UCLA.

Try and re-take all of those F's (especially if they are IGETC or lower-division coursework for your intended major) and they will be canceled out of your GPA.

A friend of mine did TAP/Scholars work for two years, and she got into UCLA with a 3.1 :O

But of course this also depends on whether you're looking into an impacted major.

I know someone that was in your situation; F's for the first year and then A's for the next 2. He got in. So maybe give yourself another year to bring up your stats before you apply. You probably won't get in this year.
