<p>So is anyone else in HOSA?</p>
<p>We just had our state conference and it was freaking fantastic! I placed first in healthcare issues and third in pharmacology.=D Who else is going to be at nationals? and what event did you do?</p>
<p>i think things i win at are freaking fantastic too.</p>
<p>I never win anything :(</p>
<p>I’m in HOSA too:) but I didn’t place at our state conference :/</p>
<p>I’m in HOSA! I also made it to nationals! I placed third in Intro to Healthcare :DDD</p>
<p>AWESOME Tangmello! Are you going to Florida? I am and it’s ridiculously expensive -.- </p>
<p>Have you ever been to nationals before?</p>
<p>Yesss! For us it’s not too bad…I mean it could have been a lot worse…Less than $200 so yay! </p>
<p>No, I haven’t…I’m so excited! Have you? If so, what is it like?</p>
<p>No I’ve never been to nationals before.</p>
<p>Why is it so cheap for you? We have to pay $1,000!</p>
<p>Ah then this should be an interesting experience :D</p>
<p>Um well we had help from our HOSA funds and the district. The $200 is only for the tickets to parks and such…Doesn’t your HOSA chapter help with the price? And I don’t think the difference in price is because of location…I’m all the way in AZ…</p>
<p>Our chapter doesn’t really help with the price because our advisor is freaking lazy. </p>
<p>I’m from NV maybe I’ll see you there!!</p>
<p>Ah booo >:O Well maybe you and the rest of the people going to nationals can do some kind of fundraising </p>
<p>You should try and find me and I’ll give you one of my Arizona pins and you can give me your Nevada pin. My goal is to collect all 50 pins!</p>
<p>Yeah I will! You should look for me and we’ll trade pins. I’m tall, skinny, and have long black hair. </p>
<p>Our chapter is going to stay at Coronado Springs. How about yours?</p>
<p>Ok! Well I will try to find you…I will have short black hair and am Asian! There’s probably gonna be like fifty bajillion people though soooo…</p>
<p>SAME. I am pretty sure everyone is staying there. It’s going to be SO nice I am EXCITED~</p>
<p>What do you guys do in HOSA? I’m thinking about joining next year. The only problem is that at my school, HOSA really isn’t a big thing. The ones that are big are debate and Mu Alpha Theta. Aka, they get the most members aka they have the chaperones and money to pay for trips… HOSA doesn’t :(</p>
<p>What exactly is HOSA?</p>
<p>Joining HOSA opens the door to an abundance of opportunities for any aspiring student with a passion for healthcare. HOSA offers opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge of different aspects of healthcare and recognizes your achievements. It also offers leadership opportunities and networking opportunities for high school students.
HOSA is a national student organization for high school students interested in a healthcare career. HOSA’s mission is “to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science technology education students, therefore, helping students to meet the needs of the health care community” (“HOSA”).
Various leadership conferences give the opportunity to take advantage of all the enriching experiences HOSA offers. In the spring there’s a state conference where you represent your local chapter. Then there’s a national conference during the summer where you represent your state. Every conference consists of four dynamic general sessions (opening, business, recognition, and awards session).
Every conference opens with an opening session with loud music in the background and with energetic HOSA members dancing while they wait for the opening session to start. Once everyone settles down all the state officers talk about their expectations for the conference and the selected key note speaker motivates and inspires everyone for careers in healthcare. After the key note speaker is done, awards for the online testing done prior to the conference are presented. At the opening session in the state leadership conference in Las Vegas, I felt connected to everyone there because we all shared the same passion of pursuing careers in healthcare.
During the leadership conference you’ll also be able to attend a wide variety of workshops conducted by healthcare officials during the business session (Kohntopp). These workshops will educate you on a variety of healthcare topics and develop your leadership skills. I learned about parliamentary procedure and developed my leadership skills in the workshop “Who is Robert and Why His Rules?” in this year’s Nevada State Leadership Conference in Las Vegas.
In addition to leadership workshops, I also attended several healthcare ones. In the workshop “Suture It” I learned how to suture, which is the process of stitching surgical or traumatic wounds. Besides learning how to suture, I expanded my knowledge in many other healthcare workshops. All of the workshops were led by quality healthcare professionals giving you the opportunity to network with doctors, chiropractors, dentist, surgeons, and other professionals.
Not only do you get the opportunity to network with key healthcare professionals through HOSA, you also meet a lot of kids enthusiastic about the same things as you. Currently HOSA’s membership is over 200,000 students from the United States (. Through HOSA you can network with kids from your state and kids from all across the nation during leadership conferences while you’re competing and attending workshops.
During the leadership conference you don’t just network and learn, you also compete. Before attending the leadership conference you would chose a competitive event that is consistent with your career objective. For example, since I’m going to be a pharmacist I chose to take the pharmacology knowledge test. Once I chose what event I was going to do I prepared for it by studying. There are other competitive events that are performance events like medical assisting. The time members invest in preparing for and participating in competitions is worth the effort because they are developing the knowledge and skills needed as a healthcare professional.
Also members who participate in the competitive events program are recognized as professionals in training interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare community. The hard work put into preparing for competitive events pays off when members are called up and they stand on stage waiting to receive a National HOSA medallion for recognition as a first, second, or third place winner. In fact Angie Haro, Elko High School senior and HOSA Vice President, described her anticipation while waiting to find out if she won as “My heart was rushing, my palms were sweating, and I was holding Alexus’s hand, when I heard my name, it felt like I had just won album of the year.”
The leadership conferences also give you a chance to travel across the country. This year’s National Leadership Conference will be held in Orlando, Florida in Disneyworld. The Conference destinations change every year. Last year the National Leadership Conference was held in Anaheim, California. Not all of the conferences are out of state, there’s also the state conference. This year’s state conference was held in Las Vegas and next year it will be in Reno.
HOSA also plays a major role in the college application process. Colleges look for your extracurricular involvement and HOSA will give you that. Colleges are also looking for passion. They want students who are focused and show passion in the area they want to pursue. Through HOSA you can compete in events and go to conferences to demonstrate your passion.
If the only thing discouraging you from joining HOSA now is that you don’t know anyone in it then stop worrying. You’ll easily establish friendships with a lot of interesting people that have the interests as you. When I first joined HOSA I didn’t know anyone but after attending the state conference and making unforgettable memories together as a club we all became close friends.
Within these four simple letters, HOSA, lies a much deeper meaning. HOSA means aiming for your goals, developing as a leader, making connections, and expanding your knowledge in a way that can’t be taught in school. Take advantage of all the opportunities HOSA has to offer by joining your school’s chapter today.</p>
can any rate the knowledge tests from least to most popular? I’m just wondering. Thanks
