Hi everyone, I’m going to be studying abroad in France for the academic year, and I definitely want to live with a host family. I have the option to either live with another American student at the host house, or live with just the family. What do you guys recommend? I’m very friendly, but I can also clam up and not approach people. I don’t have the easiest time making friends, maybe living with another student would make that easier? All in all, the whole reason I want to stay with a host family is because I really want to become fluent in French. That’s my ultimate goal! Any advice, stories, or funny tips are much appreciated!
If your goal is fluency, I’d recommend spending as little time with English-speakers as possible.
When studying abroad, shared-language clusters always form. I would recommend having an American roomie only if you know you can be very disciplined in pursuing French - but it would be better not to, imho. Besides, you will meet plenty of Americans in your program and can make friends there. Let your living experience be one of immersion in the family, even if you feel lonely at times.
What city will you be in?
You’ll meet plenty of Americans in your program, and the shared experience of being American students abroad will bring you all closer. Even if you’re a bit shy, you will likely make friends abroad. So, I’d recommend living with only the host family, as it’ll be more beneficial to your immersion.
