Hello. I have recently received disappointing news from Deerfield and Hotchkiss saying that I have been wait listed. I have good grades mostly A's, I did well on my ssat's I play many sports and my two are track and field and volleyball. I am involved in several clubs. I sing and I play the tuba. I act and have been in some plays and musicals. I have a couple of questions. For hotchkiss they told me I had to fill out this somewhat application look a like thing to continue to be on the wait list and my cousin who goes to Hotchkiss says that her friends who were waitlisted but got in did not have that and said i have a good chance. As for Deerfield they only told me to email them. What does this mean. Is there anyway I can find out my ranking? Do I have a good chance? I also heard that for example lets say 20 people made it into the schools 10 or 6.666667 (1/2 or 1/3) of different people of the number 20 would be on the waiting list? is that true? Thank you :)

There is no ranking on the WL. If a vacancy appears for, say, a female 10th grade boarder who is a domestic applicant and plays lacrosse, then school will look on the WL for a kid w a similar profile.

The DA WL is particularly challenging. DA AO said one year they pulled 2 kids off the WL and that was an unusual year. Most years it’s none.

Try reading “The Wait List” thread on the main Prep School Admissions board. It’s at the very top.
