If you like being a lounge lizard, you should see some of the dorms at THS. My son lives in Edelman; the lounge there is all-world with plush seating, dark wood paneling, and large HD television. In truth, Edelman is more like a Class A hotel than a BS dorm.

Thank you all for the input! I’m an int’l student so I can’t do revisit days and decisions would have to be made----a lot of the helpful ones coming from CC. Any ongoing impressions, thoughts, experiences, etc are hugely appreciated here!

One more thing. Without stirring up trouble and emotions, which school would have the better college matriculation results? Coming from overseas, having to separate with my pals and family, paying full tuition, my parents expect me to go to a school with results for all its worth. Its not about “feel” here. I know it all depends on me no matter where I end up going, but which one would probably give me better chance of heading to…Yale? lol

They’re both about the same. Both are very, very good schools.

choate is better because it didn’t reject me. It was my only waitlist.

(but I didn’t apply to hotchkiss so I shouldn’t say choate is better. I guess I should say that I like Choate better)

I like Choate better!!!

My brother went to Hotchkiss and he is a turd.
My Dad went to Choate and he is a !stellar! individual.

The answer is obviously go to Choate.

:) And I think Choate is on the rising trend - another reason to choose Choate.

Daughter attended summer sessions at Choate, and the staff was very kind and helpful about some homesickness that she experienced.

So, Choate!! Better known on the West Coast than Hotchkiss, and if Robert Bork went to Hotchkiss, a profound de-incentive to attend Hotchkiss. LOL.

SWHarborfan, from what my son tells me about Hotchkiss these days, stout statists and confirmed leftists are in full bloom at the school. Anyone not aligned with Justice Bork will find abundant soul mates at THS, for better or worse.

I agree that Choate is better known than Hotchkiss, but that doesn’t make Choate better than Hotchkiss. As for Hotchkiss, I knew absolutely nothing about it until about 18 months ago when my son decided to apply to BS’s. The more we learned about Hotchkiss, the more we liked it and then loved it (unlike some other BS’s). I hope all students accepted by Hotchkiss will now learn as much as they possibly can about it and then reach the same or similar conclusion as my son and his parents did about it.

Choate is better known? Well maybe slightly depending whom you ask. These two schools are really on par even on “fame”. They are very different culturally though. Hotchkiss is grand. Choate is charming. Hotchkiss is formal. Choate is warm. Both have their fans. I’d choose Choate because I feel happy and relaxed there.

In my case, I have known of Choate since the 60’s. At that time, I was in a boarding school in the South, and my roommate told me that his father went to a school in Connecticut called Choate and that his father’s roommate was some fellow named John F. Kennedy.

Hotchkiss is part of the HADES group. Well know and better grades and better facilities then Choate. It is harder to get into Hotckiss then Choate due to lower acceptance rate.
Hotchkiss has better campus and seem to be a safer environment. I would prefer Hotchkiss over Choate anyday. Too much traffic passes through Choate campus.

I believe if you can’t get into any of the HADAS schools then look for other schools.

Again it is a personal openion. All the top top 25 BS are good. See where you fit in???

Outside CC, no one knows HADES. It’s very “artificial” to put these schools together as the top 5 in the first place. And other than maybe the two Phillips, Hotchkiss is just as unfamiliar as any other boarding school to the general public. I can’t argue about the paper stats. They are out there open to the public. Everyone can check them out.

So toombs you were the friend of the son of the roommate of John F. Kennedy…talk about hooked up.

Yeah, it sounds pretty neat at first blush. Unfortunately, my roommate’s dad couldn’t stomach JFK and, I assume, the feeling was mutual. Needless to say, they weren’t roommates for long.

As I look back at this pairing, I’m guessing that these two Choate students were thrown into a room together during their first year on campus without the knowledge or consent of either. Because they both just happened to be Catholic and it was during the '30’s when WASP’s didn’t hang out with Catholics or by pure blind luck, JFK and my old roommate’s father got stuck with each other at Choate. They were unstuck the following year.

Oh well.

For the record: the term “HADES” was invented by some 13-14 year old middle school students on CC last year, and I believe, a current Hotchkiss student on CC. No one outside of CC would ever know what you were talking about. They are both great schools, and if you are fortunate enough to be admitted, you should go to revisit day and decide for yourself!

Hey, I have also applied to Hotchkiss (but not Choate) and I can tell you I’m going through the same thing. Hopefully I’m writing this before you’ve decided. I just want to say that while everyone makes good points about Choate and Hotchkiss, you really should try to go to the revisit days. That’s the way you’re going to find if you, yourself, likes the school.
Whatever school you go to you’ll get into a fine college. The most important thing is to do well at the school, no matter what school it is whether a BC school or even a public school.
Good luck on the deciding!

Hotchkiss has the edge in terms of academics, but Choate is a warmer campus where students have much more freedom. It ends up just being which is a better fit.
-Hotchkiss 3-year senior

Hotchkiss. Period.
