I am a Hotchkiss Prep, if you have any questions about student life feel free to ask me.

I know your not a lower mid, but would you possibly know how the transition is for the ones that are new?

Are the academics intense?

Do you have Saturday classes?

Confusedonhades: The lower mid transition is certainly harder than the prep one, as people have already formed groups. However I know many kids who came for only a semester in lower mid year on exchange, and were quickly welcomed. Plus there will be about 50 other new lower mids, you won’t be alone.

Planck: The academics are indeed intense. Expect to be challenged far more than in your public school. However, the feeling of accomplishment when you get, when you finally get a good grade in that tough chinese class makes it worth it.

We do indeed have Saturday classes, but only every other week for half a day, and Wednesday is a half day to compensate.

Do you know if Hotchkiss is considering switching to a Trimester system?

There will be a new headmaster, Dr. Hicks, so some changes might come. I doubt that will be one of them, but it is possible.

I’ve applied as an upper mid and would be a day student. Since most of the school is boarders are day students left out? Do day students seem to only be friends with other day students?

No. I personally don’t know who many of the day students are in my own class. Nobody really cares, and you will be spending most of the time you have here at Hotchkiss, so basically no one cares. Most of the socializing on weekdays is done over meals and during frees, as after school there is sports, then clubs, then study hall. In short, you should be fine.

Does it ever get boring not being near a “big” city or does Hotchkiss activities occupy most of your time?

Not really, there are lots of Hotchkiss activities (awesome hypnotist), and you can also go into town on the weekend. Plus there are trips to New York every so often.
