I don’t believe so; not that I heard anyway. It was in a letter to the community.

The school will undoubtedly appeal. Insurance will cover what, if anything, the school ultimately has to pay (which won’t be for a couple if years if they appeal.) Even if insurance didn’t cover it, Hotchkiss’s endowment is huge. I really wouldn’t worry about it having any negative effect on the school. It is, of course, a very sad circumstance, and I feel very badly for the girl and her family. There are two sides to every story, though, and a jury verdict is almost never the end of the story.

I guess one big question is who came up with the amount to give the family and how did they come to that conclusion?

For those who are revisiting April 5, do you know if there is a dinner the night of April 4?

Confused, does it really matter to you? It’s not going to affect your Hotchkiss experience one iota. A jury heard the facts and came up with an amount they thought would compensate this young woman for her very severe illness. Maybe the decision and the amount was warranted by the facts and maybe it wasn’t (and was awarded by a jury who felt great sympathy for this unfortunate young woman). Either way, it most likely won’t be resolved for several more years and certainly won’t be of any relevance to your boarding school experience.

I was curious sorry if this offended you. Maybe it won’t affect my Hotchkiss education, maybe it will. My curiousity of how the amount was determined was not because I think it will change my education. It was purely blunt wondering. Whether the awarded amount is 47 million or 1 million it won’t change how much sorrow I feel for the family or how I feel about Hotchkiss.

Confusedonhades:

The interest that you, other potential Hotchkiss students, and the entire THS community would have in any aspect of the Munn case is utterly obvious.

Really wanted you to know that.

Escribiendo Thank you. I figured other people were curious just as I was and I mean who wouldn’t be. I just couldn’t tell if soxmom was offended or not by my question as that wasn’t my intent. As you know, it’s very hard to read the tone or feeling of another person through a computer.

Ok, now I’m the one who’s curious. Confusedonhades, how would this case affect your Hotchkiss education? (I’m not trying to be rude here, and I was in no way offended before, I’m just actually curious about your thinking on the relationship between the Munn case and your impending start at Hotchkiss next year). Is it a concern that the amount of money would affect the resources available to the school?

Yes, it was my concern that maybe some resources wouldn’t be available or things would be cut from the curriculum. At my previous school we had a shortage of money and due to that we had to cut some of the more unpopular sports, classes, and unfortunately teachers. I know things at Hotchkiss may not get that bad, but I guess I just worry that I could see some sort of d

Gotcha. You seriously should not worry about that, there’s just no way that would happen. First, Hotchkiss’s head has stated publicly that the school has appropriate insurance coverage to deal with this situation. Second, the school is appealing the jury verdict, which may mean they never have to pay anything, or it could get reduced, or a new trial ordered, or they could settle for less than what the jury awarded. Third, even if the school did have to pay some or all of the verdict, it’s relatively speaking a drop in the bucket compared to the endowment (reported to be $362 million), and the fund-raising capabilities of the school’s alumni, if ever needed. One thing I would not worry about at any of the HADES schools is a shortage of money, no matter what the circumstances.

I see your point. Thank you for the reassurance.

Just wanted to say that I finished my revisit today and I’m so glad I made the decision to go to Hotchkiss. The revisit day only made me more excited to come and I can’t wait for September.

c-o-h, glad to hear that you are heading Hotchkiss. It is a wonderful school in so many ways.

I’m officially a part of the Hotchkiss School Class of 2017! anyone else? so excited
