Hotchkiss student here!!

Really guys!! Any questions about social things or academic or just life at boarding school?!

Yep! I’ll be a lower mid

I’m an incoming freshman and plan on playing girls soccer there next fall. I know that for varsity athletes, you get invited to campus early (just a day earlier than everyone else). However, this is by invite only. Do freshman get to do this? And if so, how do you arrange to be invited? If you’re not sure that’s ok, I was just wondering.

Because you put that you play soccer on your application, you will get an invitation for preseason. Preseason tryouts is a great opportunity to meet new people so definitely come but don’t be sad if you don’t make varsity as a freshman. Not many do! No need to contact the school as long as you put that you play soccer! Hope that helps! Do you have any other questions @hotchkisshopes ?

Does Hotchkiss have new students come earlier than returning students?

Nope in fact you return last! Proctors, seniors and orientation leaders come first. Then the athletes trying out for varsity and then all remaining students!

Alphabetcrazy, I’ve got some questions for you, about the school calendar. I’m guessing a “closed weekend” means the kids have to stay on campus that weekend, is that right? And does an “announced holiday” mean the kids have the day off school? For instance, it says Oct. 11-12 is Parents Weekend, and then Oct. 14-15 is “Announced Holidays following Parents Weekend.” So does that mean the parents come for Friday/Saturday (the 11th/12th), but then the kids can go home for a break after that and don’t have to be back to school until Tuesday the 15th?

Yes, a closed weekend means that students are require to say at school they aren’t allowed to go home or to a friends house. Announced holidays are basically just days off that have already been announced. There are no classes during those days which means you can go somewhere for those days etc… For example after parents weekend the announced holiday days are just days where you and your child can go an do something (to te city, hang out somewhere etc)

Thank you so much! Really looking forward to it!

Thanks! Do you know how much the washing and drying machines are? Like 2.75 for wash and dry?

Laundry costs about 1.25. You just put in your one card and it charges that. There is also a laundry service available where you pay a bunch at the beginning of the year and this company will come and collect your laundry and do it!

Yeah I thought about getting the laundry service but only for dry cleaning. Do you know if that’s possible?

I emailed E&R about that same option… my daughter wants to do her own laundry but there are plenty of dry-clean only things for school dress. They indicated there would be a way to send items for dry clean and pay by the item. No idea on cost, but it has to be cheaper than an unlimited option.

Thanks London! I was just trying to compare cost, obviously doing your own laundry is cheaper than the service. If you have to pay by the item I don’t know how expensive it would get.

Alphabet or any other Hotchkiss student still here, are the rooms in Edelman Hall all singles, doubles, or a mix? My son is really hoping to live in Edelman, and doesn’t really care whether he has a single or double. He didn’t want to put single down on the rooming form, if Edelman was all doubles, or vice versa.

I saw in the handbook that they are looking at revising the dress code, do you have an idea of what they might allow now?

They haven’t announced anything specific to us but I have heard that there could be changes… Let me know if you have other questions!

Hi, my D is an entering prep to Hotchkiss, we are super excited!
Have you or any friends taken Visual Art or Chinese at Hotchkiss? My D is not particularly gifted in art, hence worries abt grade for big art projects. Thx for yr reply

I meant to post the Q to “alphabetcrazy”

Sorry, a rookie to CC:-)

Hi! I took visual art my first year with almost no experience. I am not a gifted artist at all and can barely draw and paint but it was not an issue at all. The teachers understand that everyone is on a different level and they are willing to help you all the time. I don’t take Chinese so I’m not sure about that but In sure your daughter will be fine for Visual Art! Let me know if you guys have any more questions!
