Hotchkiss student here!!

Let me know if any of you have questions about Hotchkiss or boarding school in general!

@alphabetcrazy:

Thx for yr reply, it really is calming to the nerves…:-)

Can a prep take BI350 for science? Or just SC250/260? (isn’t the latter very basic & has mostly been taught in middle school?)

My D has taken 2 yrs of Spanish in MS, but she totally lost interest for Spanish & wants to Start with Chinese 1—I just think it’s a waste of that 2 yrs of Spanish, but this is her choice.

Also, she plans to take music for non-credit, I understand that this is done once weekly during class time—but doesn’t it take away regular class time. Do you know how this works out?

Thx for all your help!!

@alphabetcrazy any update on the dress code :slight_smile: ?

Hi! A prep can take biology 350 if she has covered the material in both 250 and 260. It is extremely rare because most preps haven’t taken 250 or 260 in 8th grade so that’s what they take. It is possible but it would e very difficult!

Many students do completely switch their languages. I studied French in middle school but decided to start Spanish as a Prep. It was a little difficult in the beginning just because I had had no Spanish but there are other people in the same boat and the teachers are extremely supportive!

Yes, you can take music as a non credit but that generally happens during your free period for the day. I wouldn’t suggest it because not only do you spend your free period with your instrument but you also have to practice outside of classes. It might be alot as a prep because you are just getting adjusted but if your daughter is really passionate then go for it!

There still hasn’t been a formal announcement regarding the new dress code but I will keep you posted when they let us know!

@alphabetcrazy

Hi & I just want to say we’re so lucky to have you here helping out with all these Qs—I truly appreciate all yr info.

Thx again:-)

Also, my D has been wearing T-shirts/turtlenecks/jeans all these years, she was fine with it & I saved tons of $$----looks like all this is going to change at Hotchkiss.

Hmmm, no jeans, so what do girls wear in cold weather, dress pants? Can black jeans work (just not blue denim)?? So do girls mostly wear thights/leggings in the winter?

We (girls) generally have a lot of options during the winter. All of the buildings are pretty close so you don’t need 15 layers but you still need to be warm. Girls can wear skirts with tights, black and colored jeans, sweaters, long sleeve shirts. Basically as long as there is no blue denim and we look presentable you’ll be fine. We aren’t technically allowed to wear leggings but If you have nice boots and a top with it, you’ll be fine.

You can also check out the Lookbook which is a student run website which shows some of the clothing.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help!

Also, your daughter should still bring jeans and other casual clothes that she wears now because dress code is only in effect

Sorry- the dress code is only in effect during the school day.

Question about dorms I noticed that 2 of them don’t have laundry machines so what do you do in that instance? Also, are there certain dorms that you won’t want to be in for example I know for the girls Garland is one you don’t want to be in because it’s a long walk while you want to be in Flynn because its newly renovated and fairly close to all the buildings. I talking specifically for lower mids/lower classmen.

In the two dorms with no washing machines you just go to another dorm and use those machines. It’s a bit of a hassle but not too bad. Flynn is very nice because it is renovated and close! Garland is a little farther away but it is newly renovated so it is nice. Memo and Bissel aren’t newly renovated but they are close. There are pros and cons to all of them…

Btw, I made a Facebook group for the class of 2017 at Hotchkiss. PM me if you would like to join :slight_smile: It is called Hotchkiss Prep class of 2017.

Thx @ alphabetcrazy

@alphabetcrazy Thanks! is Flynn only for upper mids and seniors?

Yes, it is.

Hi @alphabetcrazy,

I would love to have my D do sports after school everyday—does that mean sacrificing the chance to join other EC clubs? Do sports and clubs run at the same time?

Thx for your reply!

I’m going to Hotchkiss next year and I had this same question because I currently do a lot of activities and didnt want to have to give them up for sports! The way I understand it, everyone is required to do a cocurricular from 3-5 in the afternoon. This is mostly sports, but could also be theater or community service. Then, from 5-8 you have dinner and free time. This is when most clubs meet. Since everyone is doing their required cocurricular right after school, there really would be no chance of holding club meetings at that time; they are held at free time.
Im excited to meet your daughter next year!

HEEEEY. I currently attend hkiss so if theres any questions pm me or reply to my post. im open.

Hi @D1BOii &
@alphabetcrazy:

1)How’s the cell phone reception at Lakeville? My D want’s a smartphone to mainly text to her old friends. I’m trying to dissuade her from getting a phone—cos the dorm has a free phone to call anywhere/life is really busy at Hotchkiss/she can gmail her friends + I don’t have to pay:-)

What abt you guys? Do you use a cell ph at school? A lot?

2)For math—do most preps take pre-calculus?

3)For science for preps—is it OK to take SC260 (Biology) instead of SC250?

Thx for your reply!
