Hotchkiss

Hi, I did a search and couldn't find much info. Does anyone go there or have a child at Hotchkiss? Any info about academics, sports (lacrosse and soccer) and social activities would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't there anyone that knows anything about Hotchkiss???

Paging bearcats, bearcats you have a call on line 4.

Not a well known school, so I'm not surprised you're having problems. Seldomly discussed on this board so doing a search won't help much.
Probably not on boardingschoolreview.com, and since they are under-endowed, might not even have a website.

Here's what little I know: 900 students located in upstate NY. Most of their grad's go to mid-level colleges and many to places like UNH, SUNY Albany and the like. I don't think they offer lacrosse, but the soccer is pretty good. Facilities are lacking, but they are hoping to raise some $ and get their endowment up to the 50m range.

Bunkel Rating: 102,347
WBTY Indices has Hotchkiss at a pretty solid 11.24

Hope this helps!

I think no one is responding because there is so much to say about any one school. If you'd like specific details about specific questions, I know quite a bit about the school if you could be more specific. As far a generalities, it's an amazing school with incredible teachers etc. (Don't listen to Fun is Fun and do a Google search, there's plenty there).

Warriorboy648, I believe fun is fun is having a little fun at your expense. Of course Hotchkiss is extremely well known--and there is a TON of information on this forum. Just doing a search with Hotchkiss in the TITLE, brought up 2 pages of threads. Hotchkiss in a general search brought up 13 pages of information.

Just quickly looking at a few threads and found this information: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=260065&highlight=hotchkiss

You need to do a little homework as well. If you have questions about specific sports, just look at their website. I went on their sports webpage and saw they have lacrosse and soccer.

jennycraig,
Thanks, when I tried to search, the info I got was all very general. That link was a big help. We presently have 8 more visits planned. (We have gone on 4) I was trying to see if we should/could eliminate any of the top schools since my son's list seems to be top heavy (Andover, Exeter, Deerfield etc).

I appreciate everyone's help. I guess it'll stay on the list for now!!

fun is fun, hotchkiss is located in lakeville connecticut, not upstate new york

I believe Fun is Fun's post was tongue in cheek. Nothing was accurate, except perhaps the Bunkel and WTBY Indices! :)

well actually I thought fun is fun's post was quite funny

I guess his/her posts are living up to his nom de plume :)

I did realize that the fun is fun post was not correct. I have read the guidebook, checked out the website and know about the sports. None of that can give you that personal feel about a school.

Now at the risk of getting slammed, what is a bunkel score and why does it matter?

call for D'yer Maker on line two.

The Bunkel score is exactly that....all bunk! The WBTY Index though, that's a quality rating system! (My tongue is firmly in cheek) WarriorBoy, they're cracking CC "inside jokes", don't worry about the scores.

It's WTBY INDICES, and just because you're too cheap too pay for the service doesn't mean you can come on here and denigrate a valuable tool that has served many people well.

fun is fun was also making up the Bunkel Score. He inflated the Hotchkiss score by more than 16x the actual figure. Hotchkiss' Bunkel Score, which combines raw scores over 238 weighted factors, is among the highest in the nation at 6,302.9

fun is fun does not put much stock (if any) in the Bunkel Index, believing that the literature proves it's outmoded and flawed. I'm a big proponent of Bunkel -- particularly because people who buy the software (at $675, with a discount available if purchased through my personal web mall) can select as few or as many of the subcomponents, weight them as they see fit, and create their own personal Bunkel Score for college prep boarding schools.

Here are some Bunkel scores from last year (my software license precludes me from republishing this year's scores; you'll have to buy the software for updated info):

St. George's (5,886.7)
Middlesex (6,122.3)
Choate (6,376.1)
Taft (5,264.0)
Deerfield (6,940.2)
Hotchkiss (6,302.9)
Avon Old Farms (2,545.3)
Salisbury (3,003.4)
Trinity-Pawling (2,877.0) Hill (4.084.5)
Lawrenceville (5,922.6)
Blair (5,305.5)
Peddie (4,979.9)
St. Paul's (7,032.3)
Groton (6,115.9) Groton's score includes 8th grade data, but if you remove the 8th grade weighted figures, Groton scores 7,109.8
Loomis (4,788.1)
Kent (4,247.8)
Andover (7,543.2)
Exeter (6,877.2)

ok, you two, fess up. Isn't the Bunkel score all bunk? And the WBTY more of the same? Do you trifle with us?

what is the bunkel index?

That's funny! WBTY is bunk! (How ironic. I hadn't thought of that one. It will drive fun is fun crazy.)

The Bunkel Index is a proprietary software program that gives pretty much every prep boarding school a score on over 200 subcategories of information. Items include the number of volumes in the library; college placement success; prestige and alumni networking; social consciousness; diversity of students; sexual assaults; foreign language offerings; math faculty; % of boarders, etc.

All of the main categories have subcategories and many of the subcategories have sub-subcategories. Each has its own score.

Through a proprietary algorithm, the good people at Bunkel Software Labs have created the most accurate rating system around. While there are all sorts of rankings for boarding schools out there, only the Bunkel Index gives you the score behind those rankings...right down to the TENTH OF A POINT!

If the top 5 schools are bunched together and there's a big difference from 5 to 6, you can't tell that from a ranking. Bunkel highlights this sort of information.

Bunkel software -- which is available for those who are seriously interested through my personal web mall (at a 15% discount that represents the commission I would otherwise receive) -- is unique in that it allows customized rankings where the software licensee can designate which subcategories are most important and then assign them weights which then establishes a personalized ranking system.

To be fair, the big weakness in this is that it is geographically neutral. By that I mean that the software doesn't know how far away you live from a boarding school, so even if you care about that greatly you'll have to do that sorting out on your own after getting the Bunkel results.

As for WBTY...PLEASE IGNORE THEM. Those ratings are highly biased. WBTY is a product commissioned by TSAO member schools and -- SURPRISE! -- guess which schools fare the best using its outcome determinative algorithms? fun is fun thinks WBTY is awesome, but he is something of a big name boarding school snob.

Still, while Bunkel is superior (by leaps and bounds) to the WBTY Indices, these two ranking systems are far better than any others I've seen or have heard about. I can actually prove that...but that's for another day.

D'yer, please note that I have begun the copyright process for the phrase "Bunkel is Bunk" which I coined in post #13. I plan to sell a wide variety of t-shirts, bumper stickers and bobble-head dolls sporting the catchy line. You can find all of this at my super-duper web mall. Unfortunately, I can offer no discounts. Thank you, D'yer, for helping me see the light.

So, I see that fun is fun has a second user name....
