hotel chance thread

i'd like to go to the hotel school.

my experience: i did summer college last year, and im doing hotel summer college this year. i have experience working at one of my dads local restaurants, i currently work as a banquet server. after summer college i am interning at a country club and will be assisting an event planner there.

ec's: founded a habitat for humanity chapter. we've done some fundraisers and school events to raise money.
yearbook editor, started a mentoring program, and im a school ambassador. the other things are minimal.

my problems are my grades. i have about a 3.7-3.75 UW gpa (probably 3.7), but my grades have gone down over the years (harder course load)

i have yet to take the act, because my sat just sucked, but im hoping to do well.

are my grades too bad for hotel? i'm in 3 AP's now and 3 next year. im a junior and it has been my worst year for grades.

thank you

wow I will so see you at Summer College! I am going this summer as well! I think your GPA will be okay…of course, it’s not fabulous but the work experience will really help! Are you taking the a fairly rigourous courseload for your school? It also depends on your SAT/ACT scores…if they were not great it may make it harder to get in but I think summer college will really help you…maybe the work/summer college will counter out the lower end GPA and not so great SAT scores? I can’t wait for SC!!! How was last year? which program did you do?

I know people that have gotten into ivy’s with a 3.7.

IMO, your extracirriculars are very well suited to HA. What’s going to be critical is that you tie in all of those things with a kickass essay (part of Cornell’s supplement is why do you belong at the school you’re applying to). Showing how all of these things has made you suitable for HA is going to be very critical.

Also, if you’re looking for stuff to do next year, running for some leadership positions in school clubs would be very beneficial to you.

Lastly, hate to be a downer, but I think to get on the table you’d need either a 33 ACT or 2200 SAT I.

Good luck!

thanks. and you can message me if you have questions about summer college.

anyone else?

Sorry to jump in here, but my sister is somewhat interested in Hotel Administration, and is contemplating Cornell. She’s a sophomore now; what should she do to get the experience Cornell’s looking for? Her grades, other ECs, and standardized test scores won’t be an issue. (She’s about as smart as I am, so she should land a 2200 or so SAT and she’s most likely going to be valedictorian.)

she should probably just get a job in the hospitality industry now… maybe go to summer college

I agree, Im sure a summer college program at Cornell would help tremendously, and as far as jobs go, try and stay away from just being a waitress at a restaurant, while it is in the hospitality industry, and won’t hurt your application, if it is possible to get a job at a hotel, or with a caterer, that looks much more impressive on an appliaction, and it will also help her be able to aptly handle the questions about hospitality in general that will almost certainly come from the alumnus who interviews her for admissions.
