Hotel Discount at Unifieds?

Does the Hotel attached to American Management in NYC that's holding unifieds offer a discounted rate to those participating in Unifieds?
I thought I read something about that on here before, and as I'm about to make travel arrangements, I just wanted to double check.

Thanks :)

Yes, that would be the very convenient - Crowne Plaza Hotel.
When calling for reservations, you MUST ask for the AMA (American Mgmt. Assoc.) "special rate" (prior to booking).
(Check it out for this info is as of last year hopefully they still offer this.)

Thanks! any idea what this rate is? Just so I can make a cost estimate?

I wouldn't count on too much of a discount, given how much they charge per night. Over $300, if memory serves me right. That's pretty hefty.

Yes, it is more than $300 a night, even with the discount. VERY hefty.

OMG. Time to revise the budget. I already have 3 jobs and I guess I'll keep them. Wow. I am glad that I read this now as the d is a jr and I have a year plus to save. I guess I should have known, being NYC and all but living in humble, sticksville Maine....I can honestly say that reading that took my breath away!!!!!

khssstitches, keep in mind that you and your family do NOT have to stay at the Crowne Plaza (or whatever it is called) while in NYC at the Unifieds. There are other hotels and inns and not all of them cost that much! Also, may I suggest to you and others that they factor in how much it would cost in airfare/gasoline and other lodging if they had to travel to each of the schools that they or their kid plans to audition for, and look at it that way. It may turn out that paying $600 for two nights in NY and auditioning for (I am making this up!) 5 schools is a bargain of sorts, because travelling to them individually would cost a lot more.

I travel to NYC several times a year, and have for many years (in addition to previously living there). I was most recently there a few weeks ago and even I was amazed at the increase in the price for hotel rooms. If you can stay at the Crowne Plaza for $300/night, you will have found a bargain, according to current prices. That group of nice mid-town hotels that are convenient to the theatre district are currently charging $500/night on average for a standard room. Prices usually drop after the holidays so that should bring them down to the $300 range.

I just checked several hotels for the weekend of Feb. 1, 2008 (is that Unifieds weekend?) for a friend who is going to see her D who is in a Broadway show (if they ever settle the strike!), and these are the online rates I found on the hotel websites:

Marriott Marquis - advance purchase $271; regular - $319 (24 hr. canc.)

Renaissance - $319 (24 hr. canc.)

Crowne Plaza - $332 advance purchase; regular - $369 (24 hr. canc.)

The Edison (which isn't in the same league with the three above) - you can get a room in the $200 range.

If you stand at Broadway and 47th, you can see all four of these, they are that close, so any would be convenient. I would not pay what the Crowne Plaza is asking in the numbers above (I don't know what their special Unifieds rate is)- it's not as nice a hotel as either the Renaissance or the Marquis. One thing to keep in mind is that there are also huge hotel taxes in the city. On that $215 Edison room (according to their website) there will be an additional $34.51 in taxes.

Good point, NotMamaRose, it would be a bargain.....it just caught me by surprise! It is the convenience factor if Unifieds are in tha building, which is what I though I read. Anyhow, we have a whole 'nother year to deal with this and figure it out...thankfully.

I was just in NYC with my D and when I was looking at prices there was very little in the between $150 and $250 and anything under the $150 range was hostel style which is not helpful for warming up and vocalizing. We ended up staying at the best western by the javits convention center. It was a basic and simple hotel but is not convienent to public transport. We walked back to the hotel at about 9 (no shows to stay out late for) and it was a quiet walk with very few people around. I am not sure I would do it at a later time. But there is a cab company across the street and it was a quick ride to mid town.

We are looking at the Belvedere or Best Western for unifieds. They are both on w 48th street. Has anyone stayed there before? D has her Boston audition on Sunday am. Her NYU audition isn't until Monday. I'm not sure where is the best place to stay. It looks like we will be minding luggage at the NYU audition since we are going to the airport right from there. I guess we'll have to pack light.

We've booked the Econo Lodge Times Square for our Syracuse audition at $140 a night. Not sure when your NY Unifieds are, but you might check the rates for then. The motel has consistently good reviews posted and it's located at 302 W 47th. The biggest complaint is that the rooms are tiny, but that's not too uncommon for NYC. The rooms have one queen bed, so if you need more than that, look elsewhere.

chelle - I am not sure if NYU's Feb auditions are also being held at Chelsea Studios on W26th, but if so, I can highly recommend staying at the Hampton Inn on W24th. It is obviously really convenient (only a 2 block walk), you could leave the luggage at the hotel, and pick it up on the way to the airport. :-)

triplethreat, I've seen the rooms at the EconoLodge, as a friend of one of my Ds was staying there one time we were in the city and we picked her up there one day. When they say they're small, they mean TINY, and I'm not exaggerating. I've never seen a hotel room so small anywhere before, or even close to being that small, even in NYC. It was claustrophobic and I have no idea how two people would be comfy in a room like that. The other issue with the EconoLodge that I've heard from a few people is that it is extremely noisy. Just thought I'd mention these things because a rested, comfy auditionee is what you want! :)

Yikes, maybe I'll do a little more research! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks MTgrlsmom, I checked out the Hampton's rates and they are at 262.00 a night. I think it might be better to stay there and hike our way to the AMA on Sunday. At least we won't have luggage to carry around with us. I am not going to book for a while. I know the hotels go on sale after the holidays.

How about the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square? I hope this is a better choice than the Econo Lodge for comfort! :-) Rate is $180 for the first weekend in January when we'll be there, and listed at $209 the first weekend in February. The hotel is located on 8th, one block from Broadway. Again, overall good reviews, and I'm hoping this is a good choice...non-refundable policy!

chelle - you won't be disappointed :)! The Hampton Inn also has a nice breakfast included with the price or they give you one in a paper bag, kind of nice to not have to worry about on top of everything else. It is one of those hotels that you would not necessarily think of staying in if you are coming to New York to see shows and do sight seeing, but its location is actually really convenient.

triplethreat, I haven't seen the rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn but I do know people who have stayed there and who have enjoyed it enough to return! This is the one on 8th Ave. around 48th, right?

Right! Whew, it's good to know I've possibly made a better choice. There's a brand new Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea I'm going to check out for our next audition trip mid-February. Not cheap, but reasonable, and a little closer to NYU and Pace.
