As the parent of a grad student, I'm unfamiliar with the New Haven area. I've booked several rooms at two area hotels for next year's graduation and wanted to find out what what you might know about these properties and the neighborhoods they're in (Courtyard New Haven Orange/Milford and La Quinta New Haven). I couldn't afford to book rooms at the nicer hotels in the center of town due to their inflated rates during graduation. Thanks for your input.

The Orange/Milford Courtyard is nice. I haven’t stayed at La Quinta, but I’ve heard mixed reports. You’ll need a car, especially at the Courtyard.

I’m a Yale parent; I haven’t stayed at the Courtyard, but I have stayed at the La Quinta, and it’s a dive, really. Filthy carpets, sketchy parking lot, doors that don’t close properly. I would think the Courtyard is far nicer. Have you checked the Hampton Inn in Milford? I’ve stayed there a number of times. It’s well-run and very easy to get to from Yale (with car of course)

You might also try the Hilton Garden Inn in Shelton. It’s ~15mi away, but convenient to the Merritt Pkwy and to 95. We’ve stayed there over the last three years and were also able to get a reasonable price for next years graduation.
