My d. is auditioning in November. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced hotel to stay in? I checked out Hampton Inn-North and it was $236.00 a night. Is that the going rate in Ann-Arbor or our there less expensive , yet convenient places? Thanks.

Hampton Inn South may have rooms for $129/night.

I've stayed at UMichigan twice. We stayed at Holiday Inn North Campus which is right by where the Music School is (North Campus). Unfortunately, I do not recall the rate but know it was way less than the rate you (Chelle) are mentioning for a hotel as I would not have paid that rate. We stayed two nights each time and had flights. So, look up the rates for that hotel. The parking was free and it was very convenient to both campuses. We rented a car. There is also a frequent shuttle between each campus. The audition day is split between both campuses as well.

When we went to UMich last January, I bid $45 per night for a 2 1/2 star hotel on Priceline and we stayed in the Marriott Courtyard. Although you don't get to select the hotel on Priceline, since Ann Arbor is so small and there aren't very many 2 1/2 to 3 star hotels, you will probably be in that same cluster of hotels where the Marriott is.

When we had gone to visit UMich the previous summer, we bid on Priceline and stayed in the Hampton Inn-North (for $50 per night), which is right by the Marriott. I've had good luck with Priceline, especially in NYC where we have stayed in the Broadway Millennium, the Algonquin, and the Hilton New York for $100, 125, and $150 (per night), respectively.

We stayed at the Microtel, right by the Holiday Inn North. Close to School of Music. Great rates and clean. COntinental breakfast as well.

On audition day, we stayed on campus at the Inn at Michigan League - 4th floor of the very building where the auditions started. Dance auditions were also early, and right across the street. Staying in the same building allowed for an easy change of clothes before taking the bus to North campus for singing and acting audition, especially since we were there in rain and snow. Their prices are fairly reasonable and the rooms big and nice. I'll attempt to copy information from the web page:

If you're going the weekend of November 17, Michigan plays Ohio State on Saturday at Ann Arbor. Hotel rooms may be harder than usual to come by.

I just booked the Hampton Inn North for the weekend of October 19th for $99 a night. (South was already sold out.) There were even lower rates available with AAA or AARP, etc. It must be something to do with the weekend you are going. You might check Expedia or TripAdvisor for that weekend. They will show the best rates available in Ann Arbor for that weekend.

Football will determine the rate - if it is a home game weekend, rates go up. We have had alot of luck at the hotels on North campus - Mircotel, Holiday Inn and Hampton North. if you are totally closed out of Ann Arbor Hotels, Belleville is only 12 miles away near Yipsilanti and there are many hotels right off the interstate - Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, etc. Not exactly convenient, but cheaper than Football weekend rates and only a 15 minute drive. Hope this helps

Thanks, we ended up booking a room just for Thursday night. This way she'll be all ready to go for auditions on Friday. I suppose there's no need to stay Friday night anyway. We are on the waiting list for a Friday night room.

Are your kids already cleared to audition (in other words, have they applied and been accepted by the University) and given audition dates, or are you assuming they will be accepted and approved and booking hotels?

We are leaving Wednesday evening for Michigan. My d. will sit in on classes on Thursday and then she will audition on Friday. We are staying at the "Inn on the League" thanks to all your advice. Can anyone tell us what to expect once the dance auditions are done? It seems as if parents are not welcome to tag along. So do the kids move together as a group as they go from one audition to the next? We could only get the "Inn" for Thursday night because of the game. So it looks like we will be without a room for most of Friday. Any suggestions to where we could hang out. Also do we need to take a campus tour even though we get a MTD tour as part of the audition? We ran into a few people at OCU auditions who are also going to UofM this week. Good luck to all.

On Friday, you certainly could do a campus tour and information session. If your child attends UMich, they'll be attending the university and not just the BFA program. You also can walk around campus, go to a cafeteria, talk to current students. Also, walk around downtown Ann Arbor to get a feel for the area which is adjacent to the school. You may be able to have a meeting with Laura Strocezski who deals with admissions for the music school but that must be lined up in advance. I'm not sure if you can do that on an audition weekend as so many are there then but we did that on a visit that was not the audition weekend.

At the audition, there is an introductory session for parents and applicants led by the head of the program. Then, all students will do the dance audition. Parents can walk around and return when that is set to be over. Then you can go catch lunch with your student and go over the the Music School on North Campus (the intro session and dance are on the main campus). You can drive over or take a campus shuttle. Then, all the parents tend to hang out in the music school and there are some refreshments and your student is called at various times to sing, act, or do piano and in between may decide to hang with you or ideally with other applicants or talk to current students who are monitors on that day. Parents are definitely welcome to tag along but mainly are hanging out in a big reception area during the afternoon and you may see your student from time to time. My student had a close pal from Florida auditioning that day whom she rarelys sees, so she was with him between sessions. She also was talking with current students, not in the area where I was waiting. I got to hang and meet other parents and also there was a parent from my state whom I know through my D's theater experiences and so we hung out waiting for the girls.

Good luck.

NMR - D sent in her UMich application 8/21 and received "a congratulations, you have been approved to audition/interview" on 9/24, so I gather it takes them about 4 weeks to process/review the application. Hope this helps!

It helps A LOT, as my D is on pins, needles and tacks waiting for that invitation which she prays will come. Her application was filed on Oct. 15 and my guess is that she will be invited to audition, based on her academics and test scores. It's nice to know that it takes that much time ..... Thanks so much. :)

NMR, I know, similar happening in our household, as D also had that "pins, needles & tacks" thing going until that email came :-).

NMR....I am sure your D will be invited to audition. Based on my experience with my own child and my students who are applicants to UM, it takes four to five weeks to get the invite and so I imagine any day now for your D! I have a client who applied about two weeks before your D and who got the invite about a week or so ago, so that gives you an idea. I imagine your D should hear within about a week. But I think you know she meets the criteria for that invite and so no big worry.

I just looked up from my D's records....applied Oct. 3, got the invite Nov. 8. Ironically, this is very very close to a girl who is an applicant in this year's cycle in terms of the app date and invite date.

Thanks, guys. Believe me when I say this is a nightly topic at our house. D knows how competitive Michigan admissions are, but still wants the chance to show Brent Wagner what she can do! :)
By the way, does the SMTD have to have ALL admissions materials (including transcripts, counselor recommendations, etc.) before they send that invite out? I ask because my D send all of her essays, resume, rep list, etc. etc. in electronically on Oct. 15 and got her confirmation email (saying they received her stuff) the next day, but her counselor at school sent her transcripts and so on to the regular admissions office on 10-29. The online tracker thingie shows that the transcripts have not been logged in. Being the NotMamaRose I am, I called the admissions office last week, and they said that it takes about two weeks from the time something comes in to it being logged in. I guess what I am asking -- in my typical, long winded way! -- is whether the invite can be sent out based only on the application, resume, rep list and SAT scorse (which got to Michigan in early Sept.) or whether the transcript going out on 10-29 will hold things up ... Anyone know?

I don't have your answer, but my gut feeling is that they need the transcript which is a big part of an academic review. You can't go by the tracker since it may have been received but hasn't been logged in. But I think they will need a complete file before they review it. The transcript, along with the counselor's report is a significant piece.

Your daughter's invite will still come in due time. Check with UMich soon again to find out if transcripts, school report and recs have been received.
