Hotel for parents

Family friends will be accompanying their son to Columbia and are considering the four hotels below.

FLATOTEL 135 west and 52nd Street
THE NEWTON HOTEL 2528 Broadway
THE BEACON HOTEL 2130 Broadway
ON THE AVE HOTEL 2178 Broadway

Which of those would you recommend/not recommend. Are there any other good hotels near campus worth checking out?

Thanks.

Manhattan is very expensive. I suggest you consider Long Island City: less than $200 a night, only 10-15 minutes longer subway ride to Columbia each way.

Definitely the Beacon–trustworthy and really dainty too.

Went to a concert at the Beacon, and the Beacon hotel was sold out. The Beacon hotel recommended On The Ave. I stayed one night at On The Avenue. Doors located on 77th. One bedroom for 169 + 50 for parking. One time in and out with the car, and then another 50 when you return. Be aware of that. Also, the room I slept in had just enough room for a queen. Everything was clean though! They also have snacks on top of the mini-frig, don’t be tempted to take because its about 10.00 for a bottle of water. The university is not to far, and there are plenty of methods of transportation. The hotel offers two restaurants and the front desk was helpful. There is also a place called Big Nick’s Burgers and Pizza, which has one of the best $8 cheeseburgers I’ve had. Have fun!

i was in town for the Doc this past sunday-monday and stayed at the aloft harlem…it was approx $200.00. just built a couple years ago, very nice(starwood W concept hotel). comfortable bed, very secure. walked back and forth to the university, i think no more than a mile walking, maybe 20 minutes at the most. i was a tad concerned because it was in harlem, but i found that it was probably safer than most cities(i am from cleveland) and will definately stay here again when we return for orientation in august.
