Hotel Info.

Can anyone recommend a B&B or reasonable hotel located as close to the Naval Academy as possible? Yes, money is an issue. Thanks.

Scotlaur Inn, above Chick and Ruth's deli on Main Street. Very reasonable compared to local hotels. Close to gate 1.

<a href="http://scotlaurinn.com/%5B/url%5D">http://scotlaurinn.com/</a></p>

The best food is in the Deli below too!!

There are several, but they're not cheap, especially when the Academy is holding events.

Word of advice to all you parents: BOOK ROOMS FOR THE GRADUATION NOW. Yes, my parents booked all their rooms at the Holiday Inn by the mall the night before I-Day, FOUR YEARS EARLY, and already it was beginning to fill up. B&B's go even faster, especially if they are within walking distance of the Yard.

My roomie's mom booked a B&B for June Week, and it was right down the street from Gate 3. Heaven only knows how much she paid!

Been there, done that, got the T-shirts. BOOK EARLY!

Gate 1 -- is that close to the ice skating rink? I'm looking for something in the $100 range (don't laugh) for the first weekend in March.

Yes: Gate 1 is the gate near downtown Annapolis, after entering Gate 1 you would turn left to get to the ice rink. A very short walk. The Scotlaur Inn is in your price range, believe it or not!

Thank you so much. I will check it out!

My team is staying at The Hampton Inn for $90 a night. Is this B & B closer than The Hampton Inn?

Yes, much closer. The Hampton Inn is about 3 miles from the Academy in a more suburban area, not really walking distance to USNA or historic downtown -- although most area hotels offer a shuttle so that might not be a problem (be sure to check). The Scotlaur only has about 10 rooms, so managing a group might be a problem. It's right smack in the historic downtown area near the waterfront and a quick walk to the main pedestrian gate (Gate 1). Hotels this close to downtown are few -- the Marriott is right on the water but very expensive. The Lowes and O'Callaghan's on West Street are other options for hotels, a bit farther from the gate but still not unreasonable for walking to downtown. Rates for these hotels are generally $150 plus (Marriott will go up to the $300's!). However, they might have winter rates worth checking 'cause summer is the big sailing season.

There is a good list of B&B's near downtown at

Thanks! Yea, we won't be staying as a group, so no problem about the B & B having only 10 rooms. Some are staying at The HAmpton Inn, others at the Marriott. My mom and I wanted to stay at a B & B because we love them.

Thanks again everyone!

Plebe Parents Weekend I loved staying at Lowes so we could just walk back and forth to the Yard. My plebe was comfortable there too. I really felt the Marriott was overpriced.

My mom called the B & B and it is a two night minimum. I will check out Lowes.

worldshopper- check out the tread on us service academy parents- candidate visit weekends to usna. i found that the parents that posted there had a lot of great info to share.

I know this has probably been posted on a website somewhere, but can anyone tell me right off-hand what days plebe parent weekend is on? My parents want to book rooms now, but i was scanning USNA website and couldn't find it. Thank you

11,12,13 August - Tenative

Thanks Dad2B

It is a little hard to find the calendars on the site. Here's the URL

<a href="http://www.usna.edu/AcDean/calendars/calendars.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.usna.edu/AcDean/calendars/calendars.html</a></p>

(The calendars are PDF's that link from this page)

According to the Summer 2006 calendar, PPW starts on Friday August 11. Getting hotel reservations early is a good idea.

If you are coming from out of town, you'll want to arrive on Thursday afternoon/evening -- there really isn't much going on on Thursday besides "registration" (not necessary) but you'll want to be on the Yard to watch PEP as the sun comes up Friday morning. If its like past years, Mids will be able to meet up with you after noon formation on Friday and spend Friday afternoon/evening with family but have to be back at Bancroft by 10. Saturday morning there is usually a parade, and again after noon formation Mids are released for overnight liberty -- so your parents will want a hotel room for Saturday night that can hold you also! Mids will be due back on the Yard by 6 on Sunday.

Of course, the schedule could change year to year. As I understand it, only recently did they add the overnight liberty on Saturday.

Yep, oiixxg, the class of '08 was the first to have an overnight in recent history, and that was because the water was off throughout the yard due to plumbing problems. I actually have a pic of the note that was posted on the door to Bancroft announcing the overnight. Talk about happy plebes! (and parents!)

According to recent "lore" the '08 overnight was such a success they adopted it for '09 -- hope it becomes a tradition!

Now that you've got me going, I'm kickin' back smiling at the great experience of watching PEP that morning. Parents: please don't miss this! There is simply nothing more astonishing than the sight, sound and SMELL of 1200 plebes pumped up with the thrill of knowing they made it through, running laps around the sports fields. Its not just the amazing physical condition they are in, its the joy and exhubarance of knowing they did it -- comes through on every face and every shout!

Or...Alternative public calendar site here:
<a href="http://www.usna.edu/PAO/calendars.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.usna.edu/PAO/calendars.htm</a>
Then pull down Academic in the listbox.
Select the 'Year' tab then click on August.
