Hotel/Motel/B&B Opinions/Help

Where do you stay when visiting Cornell??
Why are the hotels/motels so expensive?

Does anyone have any suggestions on any type of accomodations for moving in weekend-August 22? My son,a freshman, is going to already be at Cornell and I just completely did not think of making a hotel reservation for my husband and me.
We are driving from Pittsburgh so I even went back to the city of Elmira.

We have only been to Cornell three times this year and stayed at the Statler, so I don't have a good feel for the surrounding area. I telephoned every single hotel/motel I could find and after much laughter, was told that they have been sold out since Cornell mailed the early decision letters in December.
The list of B&B is so overwhelming-any opinions?

Also, after much difficulty, we booked the following hotels for some fall weekends-any opinions?? Country Inn, Super 8, Homewood Hilton

Thank you so much for any information.

Supply = low, demand = high. I think your best bet is to book a hotel in a nearby town, maybe even as far as Syracuse. If you're bringing a car it shouldn't be that big a deal. My mom was one of those ED parents that booked their reservation in December, and she was told that she had the last room available.

Sorry for the trouble, Good Luck!

The cabins and campsites at Treman State Park are always a good option, if they are still available.

Else try Corning.

The Homewood Suites is quite new, convenient to campus and includes hot breakfast. Many of the other hotels in Ithaca are older and frankly run down. yes, as Helenrez sez, supply and demand...everyone wants a room for reunion, homecoming, graduation and orientation...and that's it!!It would be greatif we could maintain a thread of nice B&B's...that would definitely offer needed info...

I am also very interested in this topic as I am visiting in just over 2 weeks and have no figured out where to stay yet. Definitely don't want to spend a ton of money though.

My parents always stayed at the Holiday Inn downtown....it's a nice place.

If all else fails, you could sleep in the car :D The motels are also so expensive because it's NY (or so I hear). Call Cornell if you truly have trouble finding a place to stay; I'm sure they'll want to help one of their students move in.

if all else fails in Ithaca-- check out Cortland NY. That is the closest town and easiest drive to Ithaca (about 30 minutes away). There are a number of hotels in Cortland including Hampton Inn, Ramada, CountryInn, Days Inn and maybe a few others. Had one kid at Cornell and other at Cortland so I am very familiar with area.
No joke- we made our reservation for graduation when we dropped d#1 off for freshmen orientation. Many Ithaca hotels will accept reservations 4 years in advance. Others have a lottery a year before graduation.
Good luck!!

when I have stayed in Ithaca- I've been at Courtyard by Marriott- Hampton Inn- Ramada and they are all fine.
Hubby stayed at Super 8 once- he thought it was fine too.

Yeah....my parents made hotel reservations for my graduation the day I was accepted. But then the ended up canceling them b/c of the price/minimum stay.

tell me about the price/minimum stay. Minimum stay 3 days- price was about $325/nite and that was in 2004 when we made reservations for 2008.

the good news is- they do open up the campus for graduation. So we got 2dorm rooms for relatives which cost $135 per person for the week-end. You can't reserve until February (?) of senior year.
I liked the "security" of knowing we had one reserved room in Ithaca- but for all other family members, the dorms were good enough!!

That's what Holiday Inn quoted my parents with when they booked in 2005 for my graduation in May 2008. Since I ended up moving off campus my senior year and it was only my parents + sibling coming they just opted to crash in my apartment for the weekend. It was awesome :-)

Wow, that is very expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives?

the university opens up some dorms for parents and families for graduation at a very reasonable rate - you will not get that info until a few months before graduation when you get all the other info on graduation...

Keep trying.

Three days ago, due to a cancellation, we found rooms at the Hillside Inn for Aug. 21-22 that were only about $100/night. This place is a five minute walk from the main quad. Sometimes you get lucky.

I know someone staying for $75 dollars a night at a hotel, but he booked several months in advance.
