Parents- Dad and D are going to visit Tulane early March. Piggybacking onto a trip to another school where D is going to an admitted student day. Any suggestions as to where they should stay. The Iberville Suites which Tulane recommends is already full. They will not have a car.
Hopefully she will have a positive response soon from Tulane. Normally she would have waited to see if she is in or not, but timing and airfare made this trip the best idea. Airfare to other city and back was more expensive by quite a bit then airfare to 1st college and then onto Tulane and back. The airlines are definitely unpredictable.
Thanks

There is a Hampton Inn on St. Charles Ave. It is on the trolley line and very close to school. I have found this Hampton Inn to be very nice compared to other Hampton Inns.

mom60: I am a big fan of priceline. When my son and I visited Tulane for the first time, two years ago March, I paid $60.00 per night (plus tax) at the Marriott on Canal Street. As long as you are within a short walking distance of the St. Charles street car line, you are an easy 20 minutes or less from Tulane. Too bad the Iberville is full, we stayed there during move-in and enjoyed it a lot -- although as suites go, they are tiny.

We always stay at the Maison Dupuy http://www.maisondupuy.com/rates.html.

It is in the quiet back end of the quarter but six or seven blocks gets you to the St Charles streetcar and you are going to want to ride that anway. There is a stop in front of Gibson Hall. Be sure to check out Audobon Park across the street - its a real beaut with massive old live oaks.

The hotel is reasonable and has a great courtyard - lots of weddings.

Hotel Monaco on St. Charles Avenue.

It is cool....

Drury Inn and Suites on Poydras, its near canal and very close to lee circle and the streetcar line

I can second the Hampton Inn on St. Charles. Stayed there last year for the
Honors student event. The stop for the street car line is out the front door and a few steps away. If you are going to New Orleans and don't have time
to really visit the Quarter, this is a great location. I agree that it's nicer than
most Hampton Inns.

I'm taking my son this year and we hope to spend a little more time seeing NO
so will stay at Iberville Suites. Good to hear that it's recommended, concerneddad!

Yes, very friendly staff, and nicely decorated rooms. In the Quarter, but quiet. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

thank you all. I am looking into all your suggestions. The Hampton inn location sounds great but is expensive for the days they are there compared to some other places.
Hotel Monaco which I have always wanted to try the one in San Francisco is full. Drury is out of rooms with 2 beds.
Maison Dupry sounds nice and the price is good. Is the walk to the street car long?

Has anyone heard of the Royal St Charles? It appears to be on the Street car route and is 114 a night.
They will come in late one night, have the day in New Orleans to see Tulane and then fly home the next morning. I don't mind spending a bit more and having them have a bit of character. Their hotel in the other city is a chain and a bargain, only $56 including continental breakfast.
I am surprised at how many hotels are full for a monday and tuesday night not during a holiday time.

mom60, it is called -- CONVENTIONS! For parents' weekend/homecoming, we had to compete with thousands of opthmologists in for a convention. Rates were a couple a hundred a night, so we rented a car and stayed at the Sheraton at the airport for $70.00 a night. I would really urge you to try the priceline route

Also check the Cotton Exchange and adjoining Holiday Inn Express downton. They are right on the St. Charles line and just a coupld of blocks from the quarter.

Maison Dupuy is probably about 5 or six block walk from the St Charles line and either way you will make because you are not going to go to NO without at least visiting the Quarter and Jacksom Square - at least you shouldn't. It would be like going to Philly and not seeing Independence Hall.

BTW Tulane's campus is a bit of a mess these days with a lot of construction going on including a new student center that should open next January. Couple of new dorms going up too.

Thank you all. They are off tomorrow with a stop at another university on the way. And she got great news in the mail today. Her big envelope with the "Are you in" phrase arrived. I was a bit nervous having her visit with that still an unknown so we are all relieved.

What hotel did you end up with? We have started staying in Metaire when we drive to visit. The rooms are cheaper as is the parking. When we stayed at the Iberville Suites, we were charged $25 a day for parking! The Hamton Inn on St. Charles doesn't charge for parking. The hotels in Metaire were about $6 for parking.

pokey318- they ended up at the Best Western St Christopher on Magazine st. I got a great tip from Concerneddad and got a great rate under $60 a night. I spoke with Dad and D and they are very happy with the hotel. They don't have a car so I am not sure about the price of parking.
Concerneddad-thank you and the hotel is quite nice. Nice furnishings and comfortable beds and helpful staff.

Concerneddad and mom60-I'm thinking of going to the Tulane Days in early April and I checked the rates at the Best Western St Christopher on Magazine..and the rates are all around 115, is there a special way to get the 60 a night? Thanks

shinseki12, I believe that was a special introductory rate as the hotel had just opened. Anyway, I sent you a PM with the link I had sent to mom60. I am not sure whether or not that price is still valid. Also, because N.O. is such a huge convention destination, hotel prices can vary widely.

Thanks for your help concerneddad...the link didn't work though. However, when Tulane suggests you ask hotels for special Tulane rate, do it. We ended up reserving Marriot for 80 a night, when normally it's 200.

good deal. Enjoy N.O. and Tulane
