Hotel recommendations in Puerto Rico?

Has anyone traveled to Puerto Rico recently (in the past 6 months) and has a hotel they can recommend? Budget is $4-500/night. I stayed at La Concha in Condado years ago but recent reviews on TripAdvisor were not that great. Every hotel I select on that site seems to have at least a few negative reviews - not sure whether to disregard them or not. Planning on going mid-March. Thanks all.

I don’t have any Puerto Rico suggestions. But as far as the reviews go, I’d distinguish between service related bad reviews and facility related bad reviews. If the facility is rated poorly because maintenance is bad, or the hotel needs a make over, those would concern me. If one front desk person was slow or surly or something similar, I give it less weight. That person may no longer work there or the reviewer may have been rude and gotten a rude response. Just My two cents.

Good point – thanks!

Beach or no beach?

beach please

This time of the year the beaches in the North Coast can be quite rough, so I would recommend El Conquistador in Fajardo (if reopened) or the Dorado Beach Resort (either the Ritz Carlton Reserve or one of the condos managed by the rental agencies that comes with club membership). If you do not care that the beaches are rough this time of the year, and want to be in San Juan, then El San Juan or the Ritz in Isla Verde usually do not disappoint. If you are looking for more of a three-star small hotel experience, the Copamarina in the South coast town of Guanica has tranquil clear beaches all year long, and it’s in a UNESCO dry forest preserve.

I’ve stayed at the Carib Hilton in San Juan twice and really liked it. I’d go back!
Nice resort-y feel, in San Juan. The beach is not as beautiful as areas further outside the city, but it’s still pretty great-and the pool is lovely. And Old San Juan is so beautiful to walk around/for fun dinners.

The birthplace of the pina colada! I’ve stayed there a few times but not recently.

I stayed at Embassy Suites Isla Verde, it was fine. We had a rental car, so we didn’t spend days there. But the the pool, beach, and casino were fine so we would have enjoyed it if we had.

Tip: Get a Hilton Amex card for some free nights at any Hilton property.

Great information – thank you!

If you are looking for beach with authentic small town experience, check out Boquerón Beach or Buye Beach, both in Cabo Rojo which is in the south and has other great beaches for that time of the year, such as Combate and Playa Sucia. Lodging would likely need to be air bnb or timeshare. Dorado Beach is on the north but it has a wave breaker.
