Any experienced hands want to make a recommendation for hotels to stay in close to the campus?

The hotels close to campus are the Marriott Courtyard (formerly a Holiday Inn), the Colony Inn (although it may be closed due to renovations, check the website), the Omni, and the New Haven Hotel. The Omni and the New Haven hotel are slightly farther away from campus, the Courtyard is fine but some might consider its location a little sketchy (I don't), and the Colony was dark and dim, but may now be improved.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The Omni is easily the nicest one, but it's also the most expensive.

I would bet that the Omni is already sold out for Parents Weekend in 2007. People reserve years in advance. For 2007, the Omni is charging $350 per night.

What about the Fairfield one, by Ikea, not really near campus but if everything is sold out. I know for a fact they have comp. breakfast. lol Near the water too.

why not stay in Branford-lots of motels, not too far from the campus, and better yet--many fine places to dine--you'll love downtown and the Green and even get to see the spot where Yale Collge was "founded"--great place to stay while you're in the New Haven area

We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard last year, and got reservations by calling and putting our name on a list in case of cancellations. Someone cancelled. :) All the nearby hotels charge a premium for Parents' Weekend, but it's very convenient to be within walking distance of campus: parking is not easy in New Haven, particularly on a weekend like that.

Parking is not impossible in New Haven, even for Parent's Weekend. Just put the car in a commercial garage and leave it there for the day and walk everywhere.

First year we stayed at the Omni paying top buck, paid to park our car in their garage and never used it.

Second year we stayed out of town (East Haven) and drove in for the day. Much less expensive overall.

also consider looking at hotels in surrounding towns: north haven, hamden and branford are each about 10 minutes away and wouldn't be as hectic.
orange is about a 15 minutes drive on 95.

avoid west haven- not the nicest of places.

If you aren't staying near Yale (with Omni and Courtyard being the two obvious choices - I think that the Colony is under a major renovation to turn it into a hyper-upscale boutique hotel with a glass tower above it), I would recommend looking for places up Whitney Avenue in Hamden. They are an easy 10 minute drive to the center of town. Branford is also a good option and is very close, within 5-10 mins. If you are adventurous, New Haven has several renowned, posh Bed and Breakfasts that are known for ultra-low rates and amazing breakfasts (the breakfasts alone being worth more than the price of the room)... but you have to know where to look and reserve in advance. One is called the "Touch of Ireland", I think. I haven't stayed in New Haven for years, but that's what I've heard from people who have.

Thanks to all for the great suggestions. The Omni is, in fact, full.

all hotels in new haven are sold out for parents weekend. i tried two weeks ago to book a room and all i could get was a marriott about 20 min. away! for bull dog days we stayed at the omni and it decent

just stayed at the marriott courtyard IN ORANGE over the weekend and it was excellent.

I called Marriott Courtyard @ Yale earlier today to make a reservation for Parents Weekend in spite of the possibility that all rooms might already be booked. I was pleasantly surprised when told that rooms were still available, but at $309 per night (yikes!) Last year, we paid $269 per night for Parents Weekend. I went ahead and made the reservation for now, but my H might check out other hotels in nearby towns. I must say location-wise, you really can't beat Marriott's. It's so convenient to be right there on campus!!

We've ended up in the Orange. Couldn't swallow the Courtyard@New Haven cost.

I stayed at the Courtyard in New Haven for Bulldog days and will be there for preorientation but for Parents Weekend will stay at the Residence Inn, Milford about 16 miles from campus. Large 1 bedroom, with living room, sleeps five with full breakfast included, full kitchen and free parking will cost ~ $380 for two nights total. Phone: 203-283-2100.

I was told by a hotel employee that many parents book way ahead, and then can't attend , so many rooms open up closer to the weekend. I am booked at one place and on a waiting list at another, so that may open up a room. I'm sure it happens all the time. Keep checking.
